The Ring Necked Dove is one of the commonest found in captivity but also now found wild in many parts of the world including Europe, Canada, USA,Australia and was released here in New Zealand in 1862 at Papakura, near the city of Auckland.

It is thought they originated in the savannah lands south of the Sahara Desert, the Sudan and Ethiopia and across to Saudi Arabia hence the other name by which they are know -
African ring necked dove.

This dove was a group of five that have recently moved in to our area in the Bay of Islands, NZ.
