Artist's Description

The name of this yacht is ’ Hobbit. ’ The film of the same name hasn’t even been made yet in New Zealand but it has already started to arouse interest in the name here.

This photograph was taken at Opua in the Bay of Islands NZ, usually the first and last port of call for yachties arriving in and leaving NZ. The image is of the older part of Opua but in the background is the modernised wharf with one of NZ’s largest marinas beyond that. It has all the facilities one can expect to find – boatyards with slipways, ships chandlers, restaurants and cafe’s but has not lost any of it’s old charm.
I can remember back in the late 50’s & 60’s just the one wharf here, usually with a cargo ship in port, loading meat from Moerewa Freezing Works which is about ten or twelve km’s away. The rail line used to be right onto the wharf and the meat was loaded directly from the railway wagons onto the ships.
The car ferry to and from the historic town of Russell leaves from here as well. This saves an hour or more from a dusty drive by road.
