All I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by.......! by

From the poem ’ Sea Fever ’ by John Masefield.

Photograph was taken on board the three masted, top sail Schooner ’ Oosterschelde ’ which is the last remaining representative of the large fleet of Schooner’s that sailed under the Dutch flag at the beginning of the twentieth century. She is still under the Dutch flag. There are very few three masted top sail Schooner’s anywhere in the world today.
This old compass is marked in quarter points, as well as having 360 deg. There are the equivalent of 360 quarter points. When I sat for my AB’s ticket back in 1959 part of the examination was to stand in front of a compass and ’ box the compass. ’ This required you to recite every one of those quarter points such as: North, north a quarter east, north a half east, north three quarters east, nor nor east etc. and just to make it extra hard, some examiners required you to recite it backwards…..!

    Cool find and capture!

  • Many thanks Gena for your great comment and favourite. I think this compass housing needs a good polish although I think the verdigris gives it some character !

    Great capture Roy
    Love the write up
Whilst you were reciting the points on the compass, I was still hanging on to my mums apron strings.
    I started school in 1960

  • Apologies Mike – have been away for the last fortnight. Thank you very much for your kind comment. The reference to your age certainly makes me feel like an OLD codger !

Great capture and info Roy ~ I’d have trouble reciting backwards ha ha!

  • Many thanks Susie – we have just come back from Auckland after a fortnight and have plenty to catch up on. After all these years I can still box a compass but I can’t remember what I had for breakfast……lol !
