Messy Bugger - gone but not forgotten......! by

This was the 1994 Toyota Hilux, double cab 4 × 4 that we had when living on Gt. Barrier Island. The number plate read ’ Messy ’ and the surround had ’ bugger ’ on it. So, ’ Messy Bugger.’ The plate was given to us by our son – quite appropriate for a 4 X 4 and at the time Toyota were running an advert on TV for a Hilux where everything the farmer did he ended up by saying ’ bugger ! ’
It had many uses when on the Island – I can remember one morning I had to go down to the barge at the wharf, arriving with some of the stock for our shop. In the afternoon it was used as a hearse at a funeral.

Location: Gt. Barrier Island, Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand.

Messy the license plate, but Neat the photo!! Interesting and excellent story!

  • Thank you so much for the favourite Gena and your great comments. This was the best vehicle we ever owned ! It was a bit hungry on the petrol on long trips so we sold it !

Until I read the description, I thought maybe this referred to the heaps of dirty laundry in the back seat. Come to think of it, I’m STILL not sure. Good one, Roy. Stay Tidy.

  • Many thanks Sheila – I was so proud of it strangely it was never messy inside or out !

Excellent Roy and funny story. Love that car and had lot of fun with a similar one when I was in Central America.

  • Thank you Jeremy – we bought this basic model of the Hilux because it didn’t have electric windows etc. The dust and the salt air on Gt. Barrier Island would have wrecked them in no time !

    LOL

  • Many thanks Malcolm – so pleased you like it. It was such a versatile vehicle and when we took it to Auckland no-one tried to have us on ! The old rule – ’ I’m bigger than you !’
