A grand view down........Foxton Locks, UK ! by

PLEASE CLICK ON IMAGE TO VIEW LARGE.

This is a good view from near the top of the Foxton Locks on the Northern Grand Union Canal, Leicestershire, near the town of Market Harborough in England. It is also very close to the village of Great Bowden where I lived as an eight year old. I can recall my mother dragging me up this flight of locks on a very hot day – I was not impressed. I never dreamed I would be back there as an adult on a lovely canal boat, thoroughtly enjoying myself on a five week canal & river trip in 2007 !

    lovely in warm weather xx

  • Many thanks Lynn – these were hard work although we did have a lock keeper to assist ! I sat and watched all the hard work while Heather, nephew and partner slogged away ! Somebody has to be in charge…..!

    Hello Roy..
I like this VERY much.. and .. a little more in size.. the Panama canal has the same principle (^_^)

  • Thank you my friend, I appreciate your great comments. I can agree, I have been through the Panama Canal many times but I was paid to do it when at sea. Mules ( mechanical tractors ) used to haul the ships through. Heather claims she was the ’ mule ’ on English canals…..lol !

  • Many thanks Myra – pity holidays can’t go on forever…..! This is one of the icons of the British Canal systems.

Love this, although i’m sure it wasn’t calming it captures a calming and relaxed mood as I think canals are :O)
    Great work

  • Thank you very much Andy – I appreciate your kind comment and favourite. Actually, the locks produce that little bit of exercise each day ( for my wife !) while the rest of the day we trundled along at 4 miles per hour with a tiller under my arm, a pint of scrumpy in the other hand plus a plate of pork pie at the ready. You couldn’t help but relax……!

Oh Roy How GREEN! I am forgetting what green looks like. A great image love it, you can’t beat old England for her greenery can you!

  • Heartily agree with you Rita – we are in the same boat as you, no rain for three months. I do love England’s greenery but not the climate that goes with it ! Thank you for your great comment.

This is such a great photographic and informative narrative Roy

  • Many thanks Malcolm – appreciate that you like this and the narrative. Unfortunately, the whole canal system is rapidly falling into disrepair due to the incompetence of CaRT who now run it ! I’m hearing all sorts of horror stories – try googling ’ narrowboatworld ’ and see some of the tales !
