More than old friends

An empty park where two school friends meet for one last time – longing to confess their feelings for each other before it’s too late

Short stories - Spherical Scriptings and WMG

The park was deserted apart from Ray and Jess. Twenty year old Ray Simmonds and nineteen year old Jess Cooper hadn’t seen each other since finishing their ‘A’ levels, now here they were catching up on old times and desperate to admit their feelings for each other.
Jess was stunning, with dark brown eyes and shoulder length chestnut hair. Her tall, lean figure matched her cover-girl looks, but the shy Exeter University student kept it hidden, wearing baggy sweaters and trousers that helped her blend with her surroundings.
Ray had blonde hair nearly as long as Jess, with ice blue eyes that had melted many of his fellow students hearts at Loughborough University, but the only one he ever felt so sure about was here beside him on the damp, cold park bench. Ray wore a baggy army surplus parka that had seen better days, with an African violet uni scarf draping from his neck to the floor. He looked as uninteresting as Jess, but both of them saw more than what their eyes took in. The gentle, warm smell of Jess’s perfume filled Ray’s senses with a desire to give up everything just to be with her. Warm, comfortable with his true love. Oh how he wished she felt the same, but although they had been close friends for years, Jess had never shown any signs of attraction for him.
Meanwhile, Jess was lost in thought, thinking of all the fun they had had together, if only it could be more. She could put up with the scruffy clothes and hair if only they could be together.
Jess listened intently to Ray as he broke the news that he had been offered a chance to finish his degree at the University of Michigan, like Loughborough they specialised in engineering, giving him the chance to start a new life. They hadn’t seen each other for nearly two years and now just when she had rekindled her secret love for him he was going away forever.
Ray felt sick with emotion, his head told him a new life awaits on the other side of the Atlantic, while his heart told him everything he wanted from life was here on this graffiti covered bench. He had only ten minutes left to get to Temple Meads, collect his baggage from the locker and say goodbye to his old life, like casting aside a well-worn pair of jeans.
Jess felt Ray shiver with his pent up emotions, she knew her stupid shyness could lose her the very thing she wanted more than life itself. She looked into Ray’s eyes baring her soul, for the first time he knew she felt the same for him as he did for her; as their lips met all sense of time and priorities had ended.
Their love for each other was all that mattered.
