I was out walking stuff on my mind. I had the sense of being followed from behind. This made me feel wary. Was it a friend or an adversary? I stopped short and turned suddenly, confronting the most engaging eyes you could ever hope to see.
I asked the fellow, ‘Do we know each other? I think we don’t. Have we something in common or is there something you want?’
With just as engaging a smile he replied, “Would you take coffee or tea and sit with me awhile?”
I could not resist and in the blink of an eye in a coffee house we sat he and I. While drinking our brew, smiling, he explained what he was there to do.
He said, “I am The Reaper.” As he smiled even sweeter, he said, “I have been here always. I’ve watched them come into their days. I’ve watched them go into their graves.” He told me, “I am the Reaper and you are a keeper. I’ll have you to companion my days I’ll show you how to suck their souls away.”
I sat stunned feeling quite shocked. I felt the place begin to sway and to rock. I examined the truth I saw coming from his eyes as he continued on with his diatribe.
“I am The Reaper. I have watched you for a time, and I do like your style.” He said, “You have a way about you that puts folks at ease. Though you and they are not the same they’ll give to you much more than their names.”
He said, “You have done all you can on this mortal side. Come go with me on an immortal’s ride.”
He said, “I am The Reaper and you are a keeper. I am here to take you today. Yes or no you won’t be back this way. I am The Reaper come with me so that you might ease — my loneliness for eternity”
