Portrait of Grace Marks

Artist's Description

Margaret Atwood’s novel, Alias Grace, inspired me to create Portrait of Grace Marks. The novel is a Canadian historical fiction based on the real life murderess, Grace Marks.

I wanted to depict Grace Marks with a classic innocence in her face and then juxtapose this purity against the sinister strait jacket she is wearing. This contrast highlights the mystery surrounding her supposed guilt or innocence based on the fact that she was only fourteen at the time of the murders.

To create the portrait, I used an experimental approach based on the novel’s quilting motif. I used several layers of rough drawings and pieces to compose the finished portrait.
