Soft Pastels on thick white cartridge paper, 297mm x 410mm

A beautiful thing happens to some types of eucalyptus trees in Australia during summer, The trees start to change colour, look a bit shabby, then they start to shed their bark, revealing a brand new ‘skin’, cool to the touch and almost sensual in its’ smooth texture and soft pastel colours.

I drew this from a reference picture I took myself, in my own backyard in Adelaide, South Australia. The colours were not digitally enhanced for cosmetic value, it was not necessary for nature provides beauty that can not be improved!

Beautiful, Simon, the colours are so soft and I remember the feel of the new bark from my childhood.

  • Thanks! It’s a beautiful phenomenon :)

I love it. One of my favourite trees, I love how the bark is shed and shows the new growth. You have captured it well. Fantastic work.

  • Thanks so much. I love these trees too, I literally just have to hug them!!!

Oh Simon dear, I can see that tree, and I can feel the smooth touch. You are such a great artist, and I am so glad you are working now with pastels. Wonderful work.

  • Thanks so much Mary, I still have a lot to learn about pastels, but I’ll get there eventually. There are still many graphite pieces to come out of me yet though ;)

really good to see artists who work predominantly in portraiture show how good they can be at portraying nature. Great work Simon.

  • Thanks so much Martin. I guess I just never want to be perceived as a one trick pony :)
