My first real attempt at pastels.
I did this for a friend’s birthday because she loves elephants and butterflies, and she always says to me,“you dont like drawing in colour do you?”
I have always responded, “It’s not that I don’t like it, I’m just crap at it!”
So here’s another challenge I set myself, and I think I would like to practice and master the art of pastels.

Completed March 21st, 2009
Soft pastels and charcoal pencil on pale green rough canson paper, 840mm x 594mm

WOW WOW & WOW Simon! This is absolutely amazing for your first attempt at pastel! I just KNEW you would be really good with this medium. Can’t wait to see more. Join the Contemporary Pastel Painters group and put this one in……

  • Thanks! It was actually a fairly easy transition to move into pastels, but I’m thinking that doing a portrait might be a whole new ball game!!
Thanks for the group advice, will do!

Fantastic Simon, I’m certain your friend will love it (and you’re not crap at colour!!!!!)

  • Thanks! Ok, maybe ‘crap’ is not a good description, I always saw it as much harder than black and white

Just goes to show how different we all are, I find B&W MUCH harder than colour :)

  • Black and white comes naturally to me, whereas colour requires a bit more effort :)

What sort of paper did you use Simon?

  • I’m not really up with all the paper specifications, all I know is I got it from an art supplies store, I chose it from the rack. I had green in mind, so I just found something. It is fairly coarse pastel paper and I cut a bit off it to bring it down to exactly A4 x 2 for measuring the A4 print and creating a 1:2 scale piece. I’m sorry I don’t concentrate on brand names, paper types or any of that stuff, I just find what I think will work. I’m not technical at all, just a passionate artist!

Simon this is very impressive!! You painted with limitless depth of expression, textures of this cute baby elephant, and it’s delightful with a small colorful butterfly, thanks for sharing!! :)))

  • Thank so much for looking into my painting with such an eye for detail!
