Passing Time

Passing Time

My first real attempt at pastels.
I did this for a friend’s birthday because she loves elephants and butterflies, and she always says to me,”you dont like drawing in colour do you?”
I have always responded, “It’s not that I don’t like it, I’m just crap at it!”
So here’s another challenge I set myself, and I think I would like to practice and master the art of pastels.

Completed March 21st, 2009
Soft pastels and charcoal pencil on pale green rough canson paper, 840mm x 594mm

Hi Simon… your use of colour initially threw me.. but this is awesome! Your attention to detail is great (as usual) . Great job mate!!

  • Simon Aberle replied

Thanks! Yep you don’t normally see much colour from me haha

  • Lynda Robinson

    Lynda Robinson

WOW WOW & WOW Simon! This is absolutely amazing for your first attempt at pastel! I just KNEW you would be really good with this medium. Can’t wait to see more. Join the Contemporary Pastel Painters group and put this one in…...

  • Simon Aberle replied

Thanks! It was actually a fairly easy transition to move into pastels, but I’m thinking that doing a portrait might be a whole new ball game!!
Thanks for the group advice, will do!

    Alexandra Felgate

Fantastic Simon, I’m certain your friend will love it (and you’re not crap at colour!!!!!)

  • Simon Aberle replied

Thanks! Ok, maybe ‘crap’ is not a good description, I always saw it as much harder than black and white

  • Alexandra Felgate

    Alexandra Felgate

Just goes to show how different we all are, I find B&W MUCH harder than colour :)

  • Simon Aberle replied

Black and white comes naturally to me, whereas colour requires a bit more effort :)

  • Lynda Robinson

    Lynda Robinson

What sort of paper did you use Simon?

  • Simon Aberle replied

I’m not really up with all the paper specifications, all I know is I got it from an art supplies store, I chose it from the rack. I had green in mind, so I just found something. It is fairly coarse pastel paper and I cut a bit off it to bring it down to exactly A4×2 for measuring the A4 print and creating a 1:2 scale piece. I’m sorry I don’t concentrate on brand names, paper types or any of that stuff, I just find what I think will work. I’m not technical at all, just a passionate artist!

  • Lynda Robinson

    Lynda Robinson

Well that is a fairly comprehensive reply! It looks very smooth. What ever it is it worked really well!

Get outta here, your first attempt at pastels? Geesh, some people are just brilliant no matter what the medium lol…a truly beautiful piece of work

  • Simon Aberle replied

Thanks Tahnja It was my first attempt at full colour pastels, I have used white pastel on black paper several times, but to me black and white is easy, just varied tones to worry about. Colour matching and blending are a whole new ball game to me, but fortunately I posses a relentless ‘keep going’ attitude, and I wont quit until its right (or 99% right!)

This morning, I read a journal from Ismail
and saw your mention of your father and son both being talented; the question of whether one inherits characteristics which render one capable of artistic talent intrigued me so I navigated to your profile to review you portfolio and voila! It’s an impressive collection of works!
