Self Portrait 01
I have been contemplating it for some time, I guess just trying to brush up on my skills first.
I believe that every artist must do at least one self portrait, so I figured my first would have to incorporate my first love, music into the theme.
This was somewhat of a challenge, firstly because this is the way people see me, whereas I am so used to seeing a mirrored version of myself; my eyebrow ring is on the right in the mirror and my scar on my chest from when both my lungs collapsed when I was 16, etc.
Also I realised that I hate drawing bloody guitars! the strings, frets and tiny numbers on the knobs are way too detailed even for my pool of patience. The guitar in Elvis Costello wasn’t so bad because i only had to do a tiny section of two of the strings, but ah oh well, these are the challenges we artists have to conquer in order to improve :)
I took my own reference photos using the timer on my digital camera, and lots of different poses.
By The way, for those who have asked, yes I AM in a band.

Simon Aberle replied
That’s a big call! Thanks so much for looking!
carss66
awesome work,it is hard to do self portrates as you try to draw what you want to think you look like, and not how you realy look.thats why i cant draw the elephant man(me),so have never done one.just great work
Simon Aberle replied
Thanks carss66, It was hard, especially being a perfectionist, but at least now I can actually say I’ve done one, move on and continue enjoying drawing!!
David J. Vande...
Wow…. You shouldn’t have shown me this until I get mine done! This is excellent, my friend! :)
Now my challenge is to do you proud. Just keep in mind, or styles are not the same!
This has got to be one of your best!!!
Simon Aberle replied
I agree, our styles are very different, I use a lot of blending, whereas you use all pencil strokes, which I think is a REAL talent!
It will be interesting to see the two styles compared :)
Nickyknac
It is a pleasure to look at you. I am a big fan of guitar, and sexy men.
Simon Aberle replied
Thankyou! Well isn’t this one just a win-win for you then! :)

Simon Aberle replied
Thanks, it is an honour to receive a comment from one of the most talented painters on redbubble. Your work is brilliant!
Belinda "Billy...
You are a great assett to our group Works on Paper. I am impressed and appreciate your instructions on how you did this work. I think I will feature you as the artist of the week!
Simon Aberle replied
Oh wow thankyou so much, that would be fantastic!
Alice McMahon ...
Holy…..!!! Drawing skills aside, this is an incredible work! The reference is gorgeous, beautiful soft natural light, and dynamic composition. I like your subtle handling of the bedsheets and the dramatic lighting on the wall. Doesn’t hurt that you are such a handsome model. I know this phrase is overused, but can’t resist here. You Rock!
Simon Aberle replied
Thanks for thhe extensive comment! This is why I took so many reference photos, because I was using natural light, and the shadows had to fall just right. I could have used so many of them but I chose this, and passed a lot of them onto another artist David J Vanderpool who is also interested in drawing me, he thinks I am the perfect male model! I cant wait to see his interpretation of me!!
Julia Thomas
for some reason this didnt come up in my feed but I saw it on facebook so figured it had to be here. Awesome work Simon and congrats on your first self portrait – watch out it can get addictive ;)
Simon Aberle replied
Thanks, and yes I think you may be right! I’m already contemplating doing another….after the mountain of reference photos in my “to do list” :)
Alice McMahon ...
David won’t be the last who wants to paint you. BTW – I hate to draw guitar necks too. Nightmare! You did well.
Simon Aberle replied
Thanks again Alice :)
Lynda Robinson
Absolutely amazing pencil work! This just stopped me in my tracks and is so deserving of it’s featured status. Really interesting to see the WIP photos too. Congratulations David.
Simon Aberle replied

Lynda Robinson
Oops!!!! What a slip of the fingers!!!! Simon/David – yeah a big difference!!!! I apologise profoundly, but it was YOUR work I was in deep awe and admiration of! I had just read the comment above with the link to David, and it got stuck in my bird brain!
David J. Vande...
I guess I better hurry up and get your drawing done, now that you told the world! :)

TubularBelle
OH MY GOD!!!!!!! AWESOME!!!!!!! I have come onto the scene at just the right moment it seems, did you get my bubblemail? You are excrutiatingly talented and this is an exceptional piece just as a photograph before you even put pencil to paper. I wish I could articulate how looking at such a work of art makes me feel, chilling!
TubularBelle
Is graphite the same as charcoal?
Simon Aberle replied
Thanks for the amazing comment! I’m glad to be able to unleash so many strong emotions from people with my art!
No, graphite and charcoal are completely different….Graphite is basically what people generally call “lead pencils”, but they are not actually lead. I use a wide range of different grades and shades of graphite pencils.
Valerie Simms
I agree with every comment made here all I can say is wow! love it!!!

how long did this take you Simon
Simon Aberle replied
Thanks so much, glad you’re a fan
You dont have to wait, the power is within you NOW.
be patient when drawing, dont rush it, get it right.
This took me about a week all up, but I took a break from it halfway through a two week total period of working on it because it started doing my head in.

beautiful job!

i thought that was the key
...i use to rush it so where i could finish it in one day

No ladies have expressed thier desire as yet, but you know women – they are sly and quiet about thier attractions, and you often don’t know about it until a long time afterward, when it’s too late! ;)
ANNETTE HAGGER
I thought at first , this was a photo Simon !!! your work is stunning, the lights and darks superb..fantastic SP…..annd : )
Simon Aberle replied
Thank you so much for the praise, quite a few people thought it was a photo as well, but It wasn’t my intention to acheive a photo like result, I’m just a perfectionist, and I cant stop till each square centimetre is perfect…sometimes it’s a hindrance more that a help :)

Well its definitely a way to get the females to visit your page! Great pencil action going on Simon. Dammit, you’ve made me feel bad for sitting here with a book and a laptop all evening instead of working on the commission I’m meant to be doing… : ( And you’re right about guitars, not that your efforts show it. Wicked portrait.
Simon Aberle replied
Thanks! You can point any single females my way :)
TheArtistMario
I LOVE the feeling that you added to it! The reflective quality to the guitar finish, using your eraser to capture the uncut string ends… very, very cool!!
Simon Aberle replied
Thanks! I almost didn’t put in the string ends, but it was suggested by a friend while I was drawing it, so I thought, “bugger it”
I was worried that if I stuffed it up, the background would be unfixable

Claire Aberlé
Yeah, somehow I dont think you’ll be needing my help. ; )
Claire Aberlé
Ps: For the record I could have done without the string ends myself – looks a little like glare, but shit, subjectivity in art is all there is – otherwise what’s the point?
Simon Aberle replied
Well there’s no turning back now lol
Claire Aberlé
heh.No need…one opinion in a sea of adoration – let your ego fly, fella. :) If I just dared to do a sp… my egocentric nature knows, though, that it darent take on my critical soul. Besides, I get too pissed off with features. Tell me you moved eyes and lips a dozen times prior to being happy, coz the wip pics suggest utter calm ease, and that cant be true!
Simon Aberle replied
Actually I didn’t move any features as i went, believe it or not! I have a technique that I follow that enables me to place features precisely where i want them…well most of the time haha. I’m not overly egocentrical so i dont feel i need to enhance anything or whatever. However I am a self proclaimed perfectionist so i do tend to revisit some areas multiple times to fine tune shading etc to get it just right!. I spent the most time on my face in this one.
Claire Aberlé
I can understand why, its the important and complicated part – critical eyes will unconsciously forgive a slight variation on the thigh, or the shine on an inanimate. object, but the face has to be right or its not a portrait.. mail coming your way….

Hey Simon – I only just discovered David Vanderpool’s portrait of you! You are both the most amazing graphite artists! Both portraits are stunningly beautiful works of art. After looking closely at both of them I have decided I will just ignite my studio fire with my pencils!
Simon Aberle replied
Thanks so much! We are good friends (even though in opposite timezones) and we both share a common interest in bringing graphite into contemporary galleries of the worlld because as it currently stands, virtually no galleries think this medium ‘has a market’

This portrait is so evocative, I’m breathless. Emotion, texture, temperature, the pressure of the strings on the skin of your arms, the cool smoothness of the wood, the warmth emanating from your skin, even the sound presence of the room. I’m rarely hit with so much sensation in a single glance. Stunning.
Simon Aberle replied
Wow I’m so glad to have touched you with my art. I really appreciate the wonderful comment. Thanks so so much!

God it really is a trek & a half to get to the bottom of this page to even write a comment because this drawing is so loved! And its not hard to tell why. Apart from the fact that your drawing skills are incredible, I love your expression…tells a true story. Superb work.

It is perfect. Your skill with graphite is evident and it’s obvious you have a great sensitivity to subtle value change.
The mood is intense and your grip on the guitar could not more perfectly reflect that music is your first love.
Honestly, the drawing blows the photo out of the water.
Simon Aberle replied
Wowo thanks so much! What an inspiring comment :)

I just saw this as an avatar, and got curious…. wow! fantastic work! I’ve always struggled with subtleties and tonal values for sheets. Love the natural lighting!!!!
Simon Aberle replied
Thanks so much! Actually the sheets were really the last hour or so of the portrait. I could have put a lot more detail in them than I did, but I thought the main focal point was the subject (me) and the background and surrounding objects were not as important and didn’t require as much attenntion. I appreciate your comment xairoise :)
