Some Of My Favourite Sites For Making Shirts
Just a quick little entry to point people towards some of the sites on the Interwebbernet I like to use for shirt-making:
Free Stock Images – www.sxc.hu
A great site for free, high-resolution, good quality images. Make sure you check the licences on the photos you download though as some of the photographers prefer it if you ask their permission first.
Free Fonts – www.dafont.com
Dafont have one of the best organised and most up-to-date collection fonts I’ve come across on the internet. If you’ve seen a font used in a local street mag, then there’s a good chance dafont will have it. If you’re using a Mac with OSX, you can use any of the fonts on the site.
Free Vector Images – www.vectorportal.com
Now a Google search for ‘free vector images’ will turn up a lot of sites with a lot of great material, however this one is one of my favourites as again, it is quite well organised? Need some grunge splatters to use behind your artwork? Simply go to Stock Vectors>Grunges> and take your pick!
Free Logos – Freelogotypes
Need a corporate logo for a bit of parody and pisstake? This is the site for you. It doesn’t have every logo in the world, but you can usually find what you need. Make sure you watch your copyright though! You can’t just grab the Coca-Cola logo, stick it on a shirt and get away with it.
I hope this helps and good luck!

The Stockxpert site cleary states that sxc or the photographer owns the copyright to all images on the site. If you use an image from the site to create a tshirt for instance you are violating the copyright of the sxc site, and because you do not own the copyright of the image, you are violating the terms of use on Redbubble as well.
You must get written permission from sxc or the photographer to create and sell said tshirt on Redbubble.
I would advise everyone to be very cautious when using copyrighted material without written consent.
A case in point is a Canadian watercolor artist recently won the American Watercolor Society contest in July 2008, and it was discovered that she used two stock photos from a website to create the watercolor. The original photographer found out about this and went bananas (understandably) and forced the watercolor artist to withdraw her images and website from the internet. AWWS is also reviewing the issue, she will probably lose her award, and have to forfeit her prize money as well (a substantial amount).

Terry makes a very good point – was it Virgin recently who created an ad campaign recently using photos they’d taken from Flickr and used without permission?
Read the Stock Xchange terms of use. You can use the images how you want if you get permission from the owner. As a photographer on the site myself, most people are pretty good about telling you where and how they will use the photo.
