Bar Beach

Bar Beach part of the beautiful Sapphire Coast

The Bega Valley Shire is located at the south-eastern extremity of New South Wales approximately half way between Sydney and Melbourne.
The Shire’s coastal fringe extends from Wallaga Lake (Bermagui) in the north to Cape Howe and the Victorian border in the south.
Collectively, this 106-kilometre section of coastline forms the beautiful Sapphire Coast. Inland, higher peaks of the Great Dividing Range give way to rolling hills, and numerous rivers and streams.

Incredible color and contrast. The rock colors floors me unless it is Pre-Cambrian – very old billion – no oxygen in air to rust rock! fascinating photo

I used to go fishing there as a kid. A good spot at low tide. I don’t think Dave is right with the pre-cambrian as none of the eastern side of Oz is pre-cambrian. Anyway, there used to be more oxygen in the air which is why the really old parts of Oz are so red – ferric iron instead of ferrous iron.

    Steve Axford

Whoops – less oxygen is correct. Ferric oxide has less oxygen than ferrous oxide. I’ll bet you wanted to know that!!!!!

Bar Beach is in the heart of Merimbula from what I can figure. The main rocks in this region are a suite of Devonian sedimentary rocks [mudstones, siltsones, sandstones and conglomerates originally deposited from seasonal river flows], many of which have a very distinctive red colour due to their formation in a relatively dry climate forming what is known as a ‘red bed’ sequence. The red is ferric iron oxides in the muds of the mudstones and the mud-silt fraction of the coarser sediments. There are volcanic rocks in this sequence too so I cannot say for sure, without consulting a detailed map of the area, whether your outcrop image is of a ‘red bed’ sedimentary rock or an oxidised volcanic rock but chances are either way the rocks are about 370 million years old and formed when the east coast of Australia was experiencing a relative dry climate and massive volcanic eruptions..

Merimbula is one of my favourite places, Rosina. the rocks in this area lend themselves to photography. Well done – wish I was there right now. ;)
