Caught having a drink... by Rosie Appleton

I needed to find a photo that fitted the theme of “Life on the Land” for the Victorian Agricultural Shows Ltd photography competition, I entered the comp 2 weeks ago for the Berwick Show but didn’t have a photo at the time!!!

As time was running out I was taking my camera everywhere with me and on Monday morning (2 days before submission) I was on my way to meet a tradie when I came across some cows drinking in an almost empty dam. The sky had the orange glow from the smoke in the air and everything looked perfect. I took over 100 pics, but when this cow looked ’round at me I decided that this was the pic I was after… taken from the roadside of a farm in Grantville, Feb 2009

Fingers crossed… :-D

edit… won at Berwick show… got pipped at the next stage…

    G’day Rosie,

What a great shot of Bessie!
You have certainly caught the moment well and her pose and expression while not too flattering to her are still great.
A very good composition and great use of selective focus and depth of field.
The light IS wonderful and your exposure has really done it justice.
I really like the natural warnth in the colours and the well controlled contrast and highlights.
I wish you well with this bovine portrait.
