Magazine Woman
My own nouveau style of poster as a composite.
The starting point was an original oil pastel drawing commenting on magazine women. Somehow it reminded me of Angelina Jolie, not just a glossy image. A woman right there making people think about refugees and other events, not just the usual on beauty secrets. Hopefully women’s magazines will change their frontline stories so women can speak in different voice about reality. There are fires and no water on hand to fight them, a story from yesterday. People have lost their homes and temperatures have never been so high since records began. Four days of over 40 degreee heat. It is so hot train tracks are buckling and public transport systems are in chaos.
The art influences are many and make up a pastiche of Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Pop Art; all reflective of a life style and culture from respective eras. Posters in particular mark the growth of a new attention to design and graphic detail.
Today with digital imaging these bold and essentially decorative periods have been revived in various forms. The fonts of Art Nouveau, the Pop Art benda dots of Lichtenstein, the celebrity portraits of Andy Warhol, the abstract simplicity, posterization and text across the page of bold Art Deco, and, all together in a contemporary context with the passion and heart of a Remodernist, not by accident but by intent! Words that may at first appear light and playful but which are serious beyond ‘form following function’. In a way the employment of these earlier styles in whatever combination is Retro, because they are all old styles with futuristic features promoting design strength, ideas and evolving visual experiment.
The tools at the hand to morph styles in Photoshop are amazing. I hope the digitization of an image does not disqualify me as a traditional fine artist style painter!

Images are so powerful. The message sent with the image so important. Thank goodness for growth, so women can speak in any voice they choose. Freedom from fixed ideas and imagery. Lovely, thoughtful and intelligent work. Smiles from Jane.

thanks so for taking time to write Jane. This image was made before the worst fires hit…. & there were some awful fires before Marysville & KingLake were totally destroyed, little did we know what was coming.
