Often Im asked what inspires me to create fantasy art… its not something you see in real life, so I thought I would give a little insight into what does give me inspiration and how I view the world around me and how i turn this into art.
Mostly, I dont see what is right in front of me… Im off with the fairies, or checking out the way shadows hit a plant or watching the way the driver in the car next to me arches their body while stretching because they have been sitting in peak hour traffic too long.
This often gets me into trouble because when something catches my eye I tend to stare to take it in and capture it in my head for later…. Im sure people think “freak’!!
I should probably carry around a sketch pad and make sketches, its less strange than staring. I think I know how a photographer feels when they pull out their camera and start taking random pictures. Im sure this horrifies people just as much.
Most of the people in my pictures are based on people I see every day .. they dont know this of course. A simple tilt of a persons head can be the start of a whole fantasy picture.
The secret model for my picture Moon Dancer would probably die of embarassment if they knew they had inspired it! Checking out a persons body while they are not looking is really difficult and there is always that terror that one is going to get caught staring!!
I use real life models from time to time to get a pose or expression perfect, but this is generally difficult because it is unnatural. Capturing natural and spontaneous expressions and poses is more realistic.
Sometimes while Im flicking through new art uploaded at Red Bubble I will see a photograph that leaps out at me and I immediately mail the owner and suggest a collaboration while the image it evoked in my head is still fresh. So far, no one has said no…most photographers seem to be happy for me to attack their work with 3D.
Typically I will ask the co collaborator if they have any issues I should be aware of… religious issues, nudity issues, hack and slash issues… it wouldnt be fair to do a fantasy collaboration with someone and stomp all over their beliefs.
Music also plays a big part in what I create. I love silence once Im inspired, anything else is a distraction, but sometimes I hear a song and it will form into a picture in my mind and I immediately jump on my pc and start making what I see.
So that is how a picture starts for me.

Rose. You sound like a normal artist. I do the same things, I just don’t stare as much, unless she if pretty, or naked. lol

What a fascinating share! thanks Rose, it just goes to show how much everyday “moments” inspire not just you, but all of us….....and well done on being so sensitive to others as well, it is nice to know your inspiration does not come at the cost of someone else’s comfort. You are a marvel!

What an intriguing insight – it sure as hell works for you that’s for sure. Would love to know who the real life inspiration was for Moondancer.

Great insight into your creative process Rose, it’s amazing how the certain stance of a person/s will inspire you;)

hiya Geoff… shes just a random person I see a few times a week in my travels… she probably has no idea she looks like that. Most people I capture have no idea of their own beauty. Sometimes I would like to give them a copy of what I have created but Im reasonably sure that sooner or later one of them would have me arrested!!!!
