This is my favorite time of day at the Badlands. I like the way you captured the subtle pinks and grays that are typical for this time of day.

  • Rosemaree replied

Hi Scott. I loved our vissit there. We stayed for three days and two nights. We camped and almost got blown to the nextr state the first night. I have hundreds of photos from this visit but I really am not happy with them as I dont think the show the true colours. It was such an amazing place. I just loved South Dakota. We visited a number of places while we were there,,,

Thank you very much. It was a beautiful place and i would love to go back there again and spend more time exploring and I would love to learn some thing of the Native American culture of that area. I am glad that you enjoyed this piece.

I have spent some small time at Pine Ridge reservation… The People struggle, perhaps as never before in their long generations of trial… it is difficult to see the indifference of the young to the sacred Ways of their culture… but it is also uplifting, inspiring to see that these Traditions are still here, still alive… I am in awestruck wonder that Elders are still, even now, willing to open these Ways to others. It had never been a goal of mine to go to the Badlands, to Pine Ridge… but I am forever grateful that a way opened and I took it, forever grateful for the lessons I was given, and my time spent there, whether or not I ever return. The Badlands love the People, perhaps because the People love the Land… and you cannot help but feel the tremendous power, energy, wisdom, memory that saturates the Badlands as soon as you set foot there. The Badlands see you coming long before you see them! You’ve captured that beautiful moment of meeting so well here. :)

Mitakuye Oyasin is Lakota for All My Relations, or We are All Related… These two simple words in Lakota are a prayer, a gift of Love to Self and All Our Relations, acknowledging the Sacred in all things. These two words were one of the first things I was taught before entering the Badlands… and it felt, for me, like coming home. You can find this concept in other forms… “You are another me/I am another you”... from Proto Indo European cultures to the Mayan… Buddha said, “He who experiences the unity of life sees his own Self in all beings, and all beings in his own Self, and looks on everything with an impartial eye. ” However you want to put it, in whatever culture may inspire you individually, it is a concept that has had it’s prints all over my life from my earliest memories… just before my first birthday actually. It’s a path that works for me, and if this is calling to your heart in some way, I hope you explore it for yourself. :) Mitakuye Oyasin…

    :) wishing you laughter
