The Bedroom ~ Garroorigang House, Goulburn by

Taken on our recent RB Rumble to Goulburn (NSW, Australia in Garroorigang Historic Homestead. What a privilege it was to wander through this unique heritage home lived in by the collateral descendants of Explorer Hamilton Hume. Filled with a rare collection of 150 years of colonial and Australian history, Garroorigang is included in the Register of the National Estate as a site of national significance. (Goulburn is situated on the Hume Highway, named after Hamilton Hume.)

Starting life as an Inn, then moving through a period where the Inn was converted to a “gentlemen’s school” with such illustrious students as General Sir Harry Chauvel , commander of the Australian Light Horse at the capture of Beersheba in WW 1, Impressionist painter John Peter Russel, test cricketer HH Massie as well as members of a number of important pastoral and business families from the period, the residence is now very much a “Hume” private home where visitors can experience living history;

I suffer from viewfinder vision (find myself visualising a frame around everything I see) so my genre is “anything that moves and most things that don’t”!!

I don’t so much wish to document places and things, as to evoke feeling and emotion.

This leads to a diverse portfolio and constantly overloaded external hard drives…not to mention some burning of the midnight oil as I keep looking for that elusive perfect process for yet another ‘masterpiece’!!!

    Beautiful. Love these old beds. They are gorgeous.

  • And to think the house is still lived in by the family (no heating either except a few open fires when they are lit) … makes it all the more special. Thank Gail – you’d love this place. Apparently open 7 days a week.

    Bed? This is a bed! Excellent processing and presentation, Rosalie! Did people actually sleep in these, or just recline on them while being fed peeled grapes by the servants? A Favourite! :)george

  • These four-posters always look like mini rooms to me! Family members still sleep in the beds in this place … it is a genuine, working, Hume family residence. The processing was a little vexed as the rich gold of the fabric was almost overwhelming. I desaturated and did a little selective colouring … still not sure! Thanks heaps for the fav George. :)
