A couple of hours’ drive, down the Hume Highway from Sydney, is the historic village of Marulan … probably more known these days for its truck stop and service centre than for the facilities the village itself offers. I always stop for a wonderful meal or coffee on my trips – the cafe and restaurant owners are so delightful. Good old fashioned service, and lots of local chat!
Baldock’s General Store, pictured here on a stormy day in November, was built in 1870 by a Mr Cunningham. How iconic is his corrugated iron storage shed sporting the Billy Tea sign! Over that end of the verandah also you will see an info sign – the town has begun giving Historic Walking Tours. It is amazing how much history can be packed into one little village.

marulan, baldock general store, nostalgia, historic, rural, travel
I suffer from viewfinder vision (find myself visualising a frame around everything I see) so my genre is “anything that moves and most things that don’t”!!
I don’t so much wish to document places and things, as to evoke feeling and emotion.
This leads to a diverse portfolio and constantly overloaded external hard drives…not to mention some burning of the midnight oil as I keep looking for that elusive perfect process for yet another ‘masterpiece’!!!

This is beautiful Rosalie. These days we just drive down the highway and give little thought to the fact these old buildings are there. Next time I will definitely call in and check the town out♥
Every trip I call in … I still haven’t seen everything! There’s a quaint tea room behind the Wattle Glen antique shop (original convict hewn sandstone blocks) run by a wonderful senior lady, and she has so much local knowledge as well as books and info on the area… as well as home made scones and soup etc! I just hope they don’t get a renovation bug in the area and spruce everything up beyond recognition! Thanks for the fav Bev.

Excellent colour and detail Rosalie, has a lot of character!
Hey Craig – pleased you like it. The whole village still has some character, thankfully!

Marulan is lovely – the pub there is nice too and used to have good food.
The pub is now another great uninhabited relic which I haven’t processed and put up yet. Would love to be able to buy it and use it for a photographer’s retreat!

Given the weather conditions you and the R1 have combined to produce an excellent photo of this delightful piece of Australiana. I blew this right up to full screen to get the full effect because I can remember passing through this village in 1983 when we were en route to somewhere or other to take some school photos. Until I saw this I had forgotten all about it and it’s quite amazing how a photo can bring old memories flooding back!
Gorgeous
Take care
Peter
Photography is the most wonderful trigger! I must print more out and put them into albums – so nice to just browse and indulge in nostalgia. Glad it brought back memories for you my friend. And glad it stood up to the full screen! xx

Photos taken with an R1 will ALWAYS stand up to full screen viewing!
How right you are my friend!

Love these old stores. Or old buildings in general. Great Rosalie.
Would love to get inside it actually! If I keep chatting up the locals I may make it one day. Thanks Gail.

Great find, these old buildings have a lot of charcter and I always stop my car when I see one
I think my car almost anticipates me now and stops for me!! You need to do a little NSW tour Hans … the southern highlands area is excellent for historic buildings.

Stunning find and great PP work
Just off the highway on the way out to visit mum Warren. So many small villages that way with old buildings. Thanks for the encouragement.

A superb image !
A general store I would love to visit
Wouldn’t it be fun to have it stocked with all the old produce from the period! Thanks for the compliment
