My Dad ... The Larrikin by Rosalie Dale

31 March 1922 – 15 October 2009.
It certainly doesn’t feel as though a year has passed since our fellow RedBubbler and my dad left us … I have missed him sorely through all the ‘firsts’ that the initial twelve months brings.

Some months ago I’d written this poem from dad’s perspective. He always struggled (and I know I will also as the years go by!) with all the things he still wanted to achieve – and so much appreciated those who still respected him as an intelligent, worthwhile person despite his handicaps and age.

Just needed to post this as a tribute … with a few priceless shots from his life. Thanks Tai for the pic of Ashdene – the family farm where dad spent his formative years.

I suffer from viewfinder vision (find myself visualising a frame around everything I see) so my genre is “anything that moves and most things that don’t”!!

I don’t so much wish to document places and things, as to evoke feeling and emotion.

This leads to a diverse portfolio and constantly overloaded external hard drives…not to mention some burning of the midnight oil as I keep looking for that elusive perfect process for yet another ‘masterpiece’!!!

You have surpassed your normal high standard of presentation with this one. As the poem covers the years so do your Dad’s pictures and I found it great reading with a certain element of sadness to give it a master’s touch. Beautiful Rosalie
    Take care

  • Hugs mate – thank you xx

The firsts come hard, but soon pass, the fond memories remain for ever. I shall be thinking of you today/tomorrow.

  • It is strange how, once the first year is over, things become easier! Thanks mate for the support … on many levels! xx

This is so good, well done Rosa, During my many visits to Sydney it was always a great pleasure to visit Vic and chat, what a great man he was.

  • The pleasure was very much mutual Warren – you certainly made his WEEK when you’d call in. Thanks for being a great part of his life.

Rosalie. This is one of the most touching tributes I have ever seen. It sums up your dad to the tee. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting him, we did on some occasions exchange written words, from which I am able to compare with your wonderful words.

Sadly gone and terribly missed……….We’re lookin up at ya Vic.

  • Amazing how personal the online relationships can get Phil. I felt dad looked on you as a ‘sorta’ son! He really enjoyed seeing your shots – travel was something he never did and would have given his right arm for. Thank you for taking time to support him over the years. xx

Just wonderful, Rosalie, and I write with tear in my eyes… He was an internet friend from days past…

  • He certainly bonded with you and John! I heard about your shots and your comments from dad, before I had time to even boot my computer up myself. Thank you for being so supportive over those years. xxx to you both

Such a wonderful tribute Rosalie with all those touching pictures of the handsome and intelligent man who was your dad.

  • I always thought he could have given George Clooney a run for his money in his younger days! He felt great affinity for you Gilberte … I suspect because you are made from the same ‘stuff’ – strong, courageous, resiliant and always eager to learn new things. Bless you for your kind words. xx
