On my recent road trip back from Melbourne, I called in at Glenrowan – 25 kilometres from Benalla. One of the attractions is a huge Ned Kelly statue and a museum called Kate’s Cottage, which is a replica of the Kelly home, and has all sorts of interesting artifacts on display. It depicts how the Kelly family lived, and shows a replica of Ned’s suit of armour, weapons and items of the era. (Photos were taken with verbal permission …)

The sign to the left of the front door reads in part “This homestead is an authentically reconstructed replica of the Kelly Homestead as it was prior to 1889. After Ned’s hanging – the home was extended and brick chimney added. The original Kelly homestead was situated 9km on the Kelly Gap Road, Glenrowan West. All that remains is the rubble of the brick chimney.” As Kate was apparently Ned’s sister, I’m not sure why this cottage is named after her …

I suffer from viewfinder vision (find myself visualising a frame around everything I see) so my genre is “anything that moves and most things that don’t”!!

I don’t so much wish to document places and things, as to evoke feeling and emotion.

This leads to a diverse portfolio and constantly overloaded external hard drives…not to mention some burning of the midnight oil as I keep looking for that elusive perfect process for yet another ‘masterpiece’!!!

  • What’s up – tired of Ned Kelly’s family?!!! I have heaps from the vineyards, Kinglake fire area, and rural shots – just trying to get the bushranger ones done first … Thanks for the compliment!!

Stunning work Rosalie and I didn’t even have to look to know this was the doing of the R1, with considerable help from you, of course! The subject really lends itself to HDR and you have made the absolute most of it. Bewdy mate! Peter

  • Hey mate – yep the material has to be there in the first place for the processing to work! My ‘workhose’ has done it again. Thanks for the visit and kind words.

I think because Kate took over the running of the family when their mother was incarcerated before Ned got into serious trouble. Don’t quote me but I think either their mother died in gaol or when she came home she was as good as dead. Kate became the matriach of the family and the keeper of the Kelly story
She was also the one who created Ned’s publicity by writing to the papers about his wrongful treatment by the Victorian coppers …
(Did you know they were called coppers for the copper band that encircled their hats in case of a bullet piercing it to their brain! lol)
I guess you could say Kate was Ned’s PR agent – and she did a bloody good job of it too! (except I can’t help thinking because he was becoming so infamous in the papers it added to the police’s desire to martyr him! – a train full of coppers to get just one man! a massive legacy for him and show’s the force’s complete lack of faith in themselves!
    Chookas! ♥Ü♥

  • I haven’t read Kate’s side of things in depth – must go and do so. I’ve only been familiar with Ned’s story. What a fascinating piece of our history and I’m sure there are other stories out there that aren’t so well known … one day I will go digging … !! Thanks for all the great support!! xx
