Flannel Flower by Rosalie Dale

Available to buy on…

I have been watching and waiting for one of these for a month or so now – one of my favourite native flowers. There is something about their woolly (flannel?!) leaves which I find so unusual.
FEATURED in Australian Native Plants Group Dec 2014

(Actinotus helianthi)
Flannel flower, a common name applied to several herbaceous plants of the Australian genus Actinotus, belonging to the carrot family.
It is a short-lived perennial, living up to four years in its natural environment. It grows in full sun or semi-shade. They flower between late September and early December.

Of the 15 species of the genus, the best known and one of the most attractive, is the Sydney or Eastern Flannel Flower, A. helianthi, which ranges from the far south-east of NSW into south Queensland, and as far north as the sandstone tablelands inland from Rockhampton.

It is an erect subshrub, up to a metre tall, with rather brittle stems and soft silver-grey leaves having a dense covering of pale woolly hairs. The daisy-like or star-shaped flowers are up to 8 centimetres across with an outer ring of long cream petals (bracts) which are flannel-like in texture.

SOLD medium framed print to an anonymous buyer 4 May 09 Thank you!!

I suffer from viewfinder vision (find myself visualising a frame around everything I see) so my genre is “anything that moves and most things that don’t”!!

I don’t so much wish to document places and things, as to evoke feeling and emotion.

This leads to a diverse portfolio and constantly overloaded external hard drives…not to mention some burning of the midnight oil as I keep looking for that elusive perfect process for yet another ‘masterpiece’!!!

LOL – you are taking lessons from Dennis…gorgeous shot Mum, so warm with a wonderful DOF.

  • At least I knew what to google for this one Sarah – most of the other natives are beyond me – I’ll need a botanical encyclopaedia!

    G’day Rosalie,

    [Sings: “Oh what a beautyyyyy…”]
An excellent specimen of the species, photographed and presented extremely well.
The composition of the flower and its two “buddies” is very good, the exposure in wonderful light has been very well handled, there is very good use of depth of field and your focus is as crisp as a chip.
A well controlled contrast, exquisite detail and beautiful natural colour rounds off this fine floral photograph very well.

  • I felt like an interloper, adding this Dennis – more up your alley than mine! However we came across an absolute treasure trove of natives yesterday, so … I couldn’t resist!! I am chuffed by your comments and favouriting – thanks so much my friend.
