Big boys' toys ~ No 1 by Rosalie Dale

The Railway Museum at Thirlmere in the Southern Highlands of NSW (about an hour southwest of Sydney Australia) is a treasure trove of ‘big boys’ toys’!!! Must get back for more considered shots … I was unprepared for the huge potential here, and the tricky lighting. A bit more study of the manual and some practise with settings before I go next time.

I suffer from viewfinder vision (find myself visualising a frame around everything I see) so my genre is “anything that moves and most things that don’t”!!

I don’t so much wish to document places and things, as to evoke feeling and emotion.

This leads to a diverse portfolio and constantly overloaded external hard drives…not to mention some burning of the midnight oil as I keep looking for that elusive perfect process for yet another ‘masterpiece’!!!

Great HDR shot! I wanna play! I wanna play! ;) Tony.

  • Hang about – they have a licence to create a Thomas the Tank Engine so you can really ‘play’ when that is done!!! Thanks for the compliment!

Rosalie, this is a fantastic shot. I love the way the red really pops.I think you will have to return to this place for sure. The lighting is great. I don’t think you will need to do too much studying.

  • It was a bit overwhelming, there was so much to take in Suzanne – certainly will be venturing there again. Thank you for the kind words.

Whoa! that’s a big toy! And so nicely presented!

  • Some of those old engines were MASSIVE – very daunting even without fire and steam billowing! I certainly remember these carting freight along our country lines in the past. Pleased you like it Jan – thank you.

This is a really great job Rosalie. You’ve got it pretty well nailed. Oh well. Nothing like more excuses to practice.

  • Still a tad grainy Gail … seems to be a constant battle indoors for me.

love the way the red jumps at you….Super shot.Gordon
  • Hi Gordon
A bit of HDR helps to highten the colours and detail – always a fine balance between getting it right and ‘over cooking’ an image though!!
Thanks mate for the kind words.
