Softly, softly

Rosalie Dale IPA

Softly, softly

My first attempt at a soft waterfall, albeit handheld and within muttering distance of someone who sounded like he knew what he was doing!!!
So with a few attempts that ended up on the virtual ‘cutting room floor’ I think I’ve managed one that is passable.
Taken at Mt Tomah Botanical Gardens in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney … on a photography outing with Warren Williams who was visiting from Sth Africa.

Thank you all for your kind comments – waiting for a certain couple of good looking blokes to get the Blue Mountains outing organised and maybe we’ll get more chances at waterfalls!!!

  • dazgwen

    dazgwen

Great first attempt Rosalie i hope i do as good when i try!!!

  • Rosalie Dale IPA replied

Hey Darren you take a deep breath (literally!!!) and hope for the best!!! Either that or read tutorials and use the tripod and be prepared for a lot of duds. This was a bit overexposed so I worked on it a bit. Thanks for the kind words.

  • Andrew Bosman

    Andrew Bosman

For a first attempt AND hand held this is excellent Rosalie.

  • Rosalie Dale IPA replied

I’m certainly not challenging your Crown as Waterfall King Boz!!! Hand held means you also suffer from ‘breath held’ and need a moment to recover afterwards … thanks for the positive comment.

  • Will Barton

    Will Barton

This is fantastic Rosalie! Everything about this is spot on: the subdued but rich colours, the composition and of course the wonderfully blurred water.

  • Rosalie Dale IPA replied

Will that is sweet of you. It was a bit washed out straight from the camera – obviously I need to work on my settings – but, I was pretty happy with it. Thanks buddy – more practise when we get an outing going up your way!!!

  • Sharon Hammond

    Sharon Hammond

Hand-held…I’m impressed. The exposure is good too

  • Rosalie Dale IPA replied

Thanks Sharon – I’ll have to find somewhere local to practise – it was a tad overexposed initially … however, PS comes in handy!

  • Carisma

    Carisma

Great in colour and DOF! Composition too!
Please explain to this ignoramus what is meant by “soft waterfall”?

  • Rosalie Dale IPA replied

Hey Carisma – just a way of describing the white blurred effect with a slower shutter speed, as opposed to the ‘frozen’ snapshot which freezes the water as it falls. I’ve never been game to try before! Thank you for the compliments!

The wonderful Waterfall King has sent me a bub suggesting a tighter crop and I must confess his example did look good!!! Next time Boz!

  • Warren Williams

    Warren Williams

Yes Yes, it’s wonderful, much better than my shots.

    Very well done.

  • Rosalie Dale IPA replied

That is a generous comment Warren – this amateur really just fluked something passable – Boz has cropped this in, sent it to me in a bubblemail, and I must confess it looked great cropped. He suggests foilage etc distracts and maybe he’s right – need to go try some more shots now!!

  • Halcyon007

    Halcyon007

Your comments made me chuckle. There’s nothing worse than a critic on your back LOL. (You did check to make sure it wasn’t Boz getting his own back for you exposing his boat?)

Very impressive for a handheld shot. The colours and tones of the ferns are very soothing and I think your title sums the shot up perfectly.

  • Rosalie Dale IPA replied

Ah Stuart, Boz is such a gentleman he wouldn’t be trying to get his own back (much!) ... I have to stay on his good side so he’ll show me where some nice waterfalls are in the mountains! Seriously I’m OK with suggestions – in fact I welcome them – great way to learn!!! Thanks for your kind comments Stuart – much appreciated.

thats a great shot….perhaps you can tell the rest of us how to get the water so silky

  • Rosalie Dale IPA replied

    Hey Sharra –
    exp: 0.250s
    ap: f16
    ISO: 160
    WB: Auto
No polarizer (perhaps a mistake as is was sunny)
Brace yourself and hold your breath!!

It was a tad overexposed but RAW processing worked a treat.

Rosalie, this is the sort of scene I’d love to shoot. This is the sort of scene I’d love to see. We have a waterfall and fishpond in our backyard and believe me, I’ve had several attempts but none have turned out close to this. I’ll keep practicing and if I come even close to your beautiful photo I’ll pass it along. I’m keeping this with my favorites – as a guiding reference.

  • Rosalie Dale IPA replied

Warren it was a bit of a fluke I must confess as I was waiting for Warren Williams to do his shots, but it has encouraged me to try some more. My settings for this, in bright sun and hand held (and holding my breath!!!) were as follows:
    exp: 0.250s
    ap: f16
    ISO: 160
    WB: Auto
No polarizer (perhaps a mistake as is was sunny)
    Hand held

That may, or may not, help!!! Thanks for the favouriting and for your very kind comments!

  • Rosalie Dale IPA

    Rosalie Dale IPA

    Claire thank you so much!

  • WarrenMackenzie

    WarrenMackenzie

    Hi Rosalie,
Thank you for sending your comments and camera settings. I’ll go back to some of mine and compare exp. I’m sure they are quite a bit faster than your’s. I note you did your’s as hand-held at 1/4 sec. so that’s what I’ll be aiming for.

In just over a week my wife and I are off to Italy and one of the places we intend to visit is a palace where much of the filming for Star Wars has taken place and there are a lot of waterfalls around there.

    Thanks again, Warren
