This is a wonderful pic and composition Rosalie. Thanks for all the information….I went one day to Flanders Fields…it’s extremely moving to see all those cimetaries and read the names of all these young boys fallen in our fields, never to go home again.I have known one British soldier having to go from our country to the Battle of Arnhem (the Netherlands…A Bridge too far) and fell there.
Another British soldier from the Liberation Army came in our street.
Their equipment couldn’t follow so quickly…he was still equipped with his camouflage net and my dad let him use our bathroom to get a bit refreshed.they did not know where they were neither did their wives.Letters were sent to BLA (British Liberation Army) dad showed him the map of Antwerp and I asked his home address and wrote to his wife telling her husband was safe and passed Antwerp. He went to Germany and then back home without having been injured.Since that day in 1945 I exchange letters with his wife every Christmas. He passed away some years ago but we go on writing…the lady may be 90 this year.I’m always a bit anxious awaiting that letter…she said we could be in the book of records for the longest friendship.

What an amazing story Gilberte – you have started my day with a tear! I am not surprised that the two of you still correspond. The scene at Flanders would have been breathtaking. I stood in the huge cemetary at Khanchanaburi in Thailand and was overwhelmed by not only the masses of individual graves, but the graves that were actually ‘mass’ graves of unknown soldiers. It would be a very hard hearted person indeed who could stand there and not have tears roll down their cheeks. Thank you for sharing! xxx

Too many forget or don’t know how or why they have the freedom enjoyed by us.Those that served should never be forgotten we owe them so much. A wonderful tribute Rosalie.
Rosalie Dale IPA replied 16 days ago
Paul sometimes I think we take a lot for granted. At least a few times a year it does us good to stop and think, and be grateful. Thanks my friend.

A poignant and moving tribute Rosalie and done with an artistic touch. It spawned some evocative reactions as I read the comments. Particularly liked Gilberte’s story. How compelling. So thanks for remembering. Also, I read your statement on your home page and liked what you said and your writing style.
Rosalie Dale IPA replied 16 days ago
Thanks Dave – I was so moved by Gilberte’s story also. I’ve always been humbled by those who were willing to die for our freedom. The least we can do is pay tribue.

A very fine composition. Thank you for sharing it with us; I wish you could diffuse it more widely! Does the British (etc) Legion have a competition? They ought to.
Nigel Dickinson 15 days ago
Australian! My mistake – apologies. But we stood together then, and should still do so now.
Rosalie Dale IPA replied 15 days ago
Nigel (the “not-the-famous-photographer”!!) thank you for the lovely words. My dad, an old war vet, passed away a few weeks ago, and was a redbubbler so this is quite meaningful to me. Shoulder to shoulder .. !!! Hopefully we won’t ever see loss as happened in WWI and WWII.

Your dad would be so proud to see this moving tribute gracing today’s home page.
Rosalie Dale IPA replied 15 days ago
Yep dad wasn’t averse to a little boasting – he’d have been quite chuffed his medals were up there and the staff at the village would have been pressured into admiring them. Thanks for the kind words.

Of course I have the same medals here about 3 feet away from me and have been trying to work out a way to photograph them and do them justice for the past 2 days. I didn’t feel the need to any more once I saw your shot. An instant fav of course! :)
Lest we forget.
Rosalie Dale IPA replied 15 days ago
:+)) Thanks so much for the fav Carey. I had bubbled the RB team today actually suggesting they needed a Remembrance Day feature somewhere … not expecting this. I appreciate your support.. xx
