Lithgow Blast Furnace
Another shot from the Lithgow Blast Furnace (just west of the Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia) ... a site which is now the only remaining relic of Australia’s iron-making history. Walls are barely standing – these structures are a sad shell of what they were. The Furnace was established in 1886 by William Sandford, and it continued production until 1928 when the entire industry was moved to Port Kembla on the South Coast.

Lithgow Blast Furnace belongs to the following groups:
Australia! You're Standing In it...., Australian Landmarks and Icons, Former DPF Members, Freedom to Shine, Friends of RedBubble, History, Human and Nature, Live, Love, Dream: , New South Wales Photography, Old farts of redbubble, Out of the Past, Rusty, Crusty and Falling to Bits - 2 Per 24 Hours, The Addicted Photographerâ–º2 Per Dayâ—„ and Unwanted , Abandoned & Saved Through Preservation. Great shot Rosalie. I don’t remember seeing this angle when I was there last year.
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
Ummm I did wander off just a bit – when you look at the site from the carpark, these 2 freestanding remains of walls are off to the left of the main structure. It is such a surreal feeling being there – not our usual Aussie type piece of architecture!
John Edwards
Stunning shot Rosalie.
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
Thanks so much John for the fav
John Kowalski
This is a wonderful shot Rosalie! the structure is rather imposing shot from this angle! the menacing clouds add some drama which completes this fabulous image!!
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
Thanks a lot John. Fascinating area this with all the old buildings. Had to take off just after this as the storm certainly was brewing!
Josie Jackson
Love the angle Rosalie, give it that “eerie” feeling, love the structure and the plants growing out of it, great capture
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
Strange stormy day did add to the feel Josie – the weather changed pretty quickly. That seems to be a creeper – not sure if it was deciduous and had lost leaves, or if it actually was dead! Should go back and visit in summer!
Kenart
Oh I know this place Rosalie and you have really done its atmosphere justice.
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
The storm helped Ken! Thanks for the kind words.

Beautiful Rosalie. You will be pleased to know that the Blast Furnace is part of the Lithgow Cultural Precinct and we are currently about to undertake a cultural precinct study which will assist in developing this site and a number of others within the precinct.
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
I cannot believe how huge that site was, looking at the signs around the area. What an impressive sight it must have been when it was in full steam!!!
Thordis
Great shot Rosalie, love the ominous sky !
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
I’m surprised it didn’t snow Thordis! It was stormy and came up so cold! Thanks for the kind words.

Amazing! We covered all of this area in 1983 and again late 1987 but I can’t ever recall seeing this, yet we would certainly have called in to the Visitor Centre to ask about local sights-not- to-be-missed. What a great shot this is and the weather was on your side by providing the exact right atmosphere for the shot you were taking. Very well spotted and captured. Peter
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
It is sort of on the edge of town – maybe the locals just took it for granted back then. I also had passed through countless times, having lived west of here, and had never seen it before. If you ever come over this way again … !!!!
Michael Matthews
Thanks Rosalie. I should have spent more time there. I love the way you have made the vegetation look like wings & the colours are beautiful.
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
You’ll have to mosey on over again sometime Michael! And wander off down towards Harley Vale etc – backroads there are just wonderful! Thanks for the fav.
