The Mangle
The sheet caught the light and dominated this shot so I have fiddled quite a bit to try and subdue the blow-out. Hope it worked.
This particular piece of machinery holds unpleasant memories for me – my finger was squashed between rollers (dumb kids playing where they shouldn’t!!!) – tough lesson learned!

Great shot Rosalie, I remember these,lol. I think we’re showing our ages,lol
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
Actually ours was used to squash oats for the kids (baby goats!!) to eat but it still got a good workout!
Sarah Moore
Hmmm – the mangle your nemesis!! Great work Mum…no sign of blowout there!!
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
Used a mask and a quick fix – starting to realise how useful masking can be!

Absolutely excellent photo Rosalie!!!
Kudos to you as well.. in that despite the painful memories.. you were able to bring this “creature” back to life!!! lol
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
Thanks for the fav Ken … these pieces of equipment always give me the shudders. But I still find the still life interesting and a challenge!

Yes. I remember these well. I told my sister to put her fingers in whilst I turned the handle. She obliged. As you said (dumb kids playing where they shouldn’t!!!).
Great shot. Good save on the blowout.
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
Trouble was we had it screwed down to its tightest. Not a good idea! I used my newly aquired skill with masks to do a job on the blowout – now I see how it can be used!
Lois Bryan
Oh Rosalie I LOVE this one!!! Now, is a mangle the same as a big ironing machine?? My mom had one!!!!! I just barely remember it and somehow the word “mangle” rings a bell … so I think?? Glorious image … breathtaking … it could be coming right out of history straight at us!!!! Don’t worry about the white … ya done gooooood!!!!
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
I do appreciate the fav Lois – thank you.

Wonderful photo Rosalie beautiful colour and wow really love it would make a fabulous illustration in a home magazine
yes I remember mangles both granmothers had one also wood coppers and we had to use them at High School in home management! Yikes! even the electric ones on the washing machines I used to get tangled up with I remember wearing rubber gloves and getting caught…..
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
Oh yes – the old copper. There is a shot of that also from yesterday! To the right in this pic is an old wooden “washing machine”
-I suspect that possibly was worked by hand also? Don’t remember coming across one myself.Josie Jackson
Great job Rosalie, love it, sure brings back memories, you did a great job with the lighting, lovely angle, love the bucket and mob, really great capture. Also brings back memories for me, I had the best old washing machine with a mangle, would leave modern washing machines for dead.
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
The old system probably gave the clothes a good workout – our modern materials wouldn’t last if they were mangled and boiled and scrubbed and bleached!

Rosalie Dale IPA replied
Having it screwed down to its’ tightest setting and pushing watermelon skins through just for the heck of it – doesn’t do much good for the finger! So much for the ‘good ol’ days’!! Thanks for the kind words Deb
