Sheltered . . .
At this time of the year the Amanita muscaria (also known as fly agaric) grow in profusion in the pine needles of this forest in the Blue Mountains (NSW, Australia). I believe they have magic qualities if eaten (I can imagine!!) ... there must be some very happy little creatures around as a lot of the mushrooms have holes in them!
This time last year, I shot Persistence in the same area.

Sarah Moore
So pretty! Needs a fairy though…LOL
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
Yep as Sharon says, where are they when you need them!!
Memaa
Fantastic shot, Rosalie. I have never seen anything like these funny mushrooms in person. What a great find. They are so bright red….....I guess they are very poisonous?
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
They certainly are quite potent Sue – someone last year suggested that drinking the urine of reindeer who have eaten these mushrooms is practised in some parts of the world (wonder if this is why Santa is so happy and he dresses in red and white?!!!) ... not really on my ‘to do’ list!!
Sharon Hammond
I’ve never seen one in real life. Gorgeous. I agree with Sarah – fairys (where are they when you need them)
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
You are right about the fairies! There were masses of red mushies in this area Sharon – I think it is Birch Pines that seem to encourage their growth. Fascinating to walk through – very story-bookish!
Tom Gomez
Excellent shot Rosalie, great colours …
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
They are stunning in real life Tom. Thanks heaps
Marvin Collins
Beautiful, I think if you ate a few of these you might see fairies…........
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
I’m laughing here – you are right Marvin – probably see MORE than fairies! (and why do I think of Tedz whenever I see them? Hmmmm … shroom king!!).
Marilyn Harris
Beautiful shrooms Rosalie! Great title! x :o)
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
Thanks for adding this to your favs Marilyn. They were fascinating!
GailD
Wow. They are vibrant. I’ve not seen these ‘in the flesh’ so as to speak. Brilliant detail.
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
I purposely didn’t clean these ones up too much – got them in their natural state pushing up through the needles – they are really bright at this stage and turn a strange orange colour as they age! A hippy paradise?! Thanks for the encouragement Gail
Shelly Harris
Wonderful photo!
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
Thanks so much Shelly
Lorraine Creagh
I was at Oberon over easter and in the pine forests. I took a couple of shots of these gorgeous red mushroom also. Not nearly as nice as yours. Great shot.
Oh, it’s shame the fairies were hiding =P
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
It is always fun to find these mushies lurking Lorraine isn’t it! Yep shame about the fairies – although who knows who’s taking bites out of these beauties! They may come out at night … ?

They are there…definately…my grandma told me…she was a wise lady… Fairies…..Some are shy, some a cheeky…no doubt, the minute you turned your back they jumped out and poked out their little tongues and laughed. ;-)

Gorgeous, the colours just pop these off the page..where are those little faery folk when you need them? (I could take a guess though, especially if they’re the one’s making the holes..LOL)

Great photo. Those mushies always seem to elicit delight and wonder from people, although they’re not too uncommon. A fungal ‘weed’ in Australia though. If you’re interested, there’s a place in Victoria that keeps records of this species along with selected others, for research purposes…. http://fungimap.rbg.vic.gov.au/fsp/fsp.html
Keep up the great work!

Awesome capture !

Great shot. There are huge examples on Leura Golf course (they tend to get decapitated by errant 5 irons).
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
Don’t some of them grow huge! They’d actually give the golfers something to aim for I guess!

Just fabulous, Rosalie! Wonderful rich colours and lovely composition. Who needs LSD when you have these? When I was a kid we called them toadstools; though I’ve never actually seen a toad sitting on one. I think you’re on to something about Santa though; it would explain a lot about him.
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
I’m sure Santa is jolly for a good reason Bevan … !!!

This is so stunning! How can something so beautiful be so poisonous! I hope that little creature munching on it is still around. In German we call this “Fliegenpilz” and we learn from early childhood not to touch (or eat :D)..wonderful! Marita
