Rosalie Dale IPA

Sheltered . . .

At this time of the year the Amanita muscaria (also known as fly agaric) grow in profusion in the pine needles of this forest in the Blue Mountains (NSW, Australia). I believe they have magic qualities if eaten (I can imagine!!) ... there must be some very happy little creatures around as a lot of the mushrooms have holes in them!

This time last year, I shot Persistence in the same area.

So pretty! Needs a fairy though…LOL

  • Rosalie Dale IPA replied

Yep as Sharon says, where are they when you need them!!

  • Memaa

    Memaa

Fantastic shot, Rosalie. I have never seen anything like these funny mushrooms in person. What a great find. They are so bright red….....I guess they are very poisonous?

  • Rosalie Dale IPA replied

They certainly are quite potent Sue – someone last year suggested that drinking the urine of reindeer who have eaten these mushrooms is practised in some parts of the world (wonder if this is why Santa is so happy and he dresses in red and white?!!!) ... not really on my ‘to do’ list!!

  • Sharon Hammond

    Sharon Hammond

I’ve never seen one in real life. Gorgeous. I agree with Sarah – fairys (where are they when you need them)

  • Rosalie Dale IPA replied

You are right about the fairies! There were masses of red mushies in this area Sharon – I think it is Birch Pines that seem to encourage their growth. Fascinating to walk through – very story-bookish!

Wow. They are vibrant. I’ve not seen these ‘in the flesh’ so as to speak. Brilliant detail.

  • Rosalie Dale IPA replied

I purposely didn’t clean these ones up too much – got them in their natural state pushing up through the needles – they are really bright at this stage and turn a strange orange colour as they age! A hippy paradise?! Thanks for the encouragement Gail

  • Rosalie Dale IPA replied

It is always fun to find these mushies lurking Lorraine isn’t it! Yep shame about the fairies – although who knows who’s taking bites out of these beauties! They may come out at night … ?

Great photo. Those mushies always seem to elicit delight and wonder from people, although they’re not too uncommon. A fungal ‘weed’ in Australia though. If you’re interested, there’s a place in Victoria that keeps records of this species along with selected others, for research purposes…. http://fungimap.rbg.vic.gov.au/fsp/fsp.html

    Keep up the great work!

Just fabulous, Rosalie! Wonderful rich colours and lovely composition. Who needs LSD when you have these? When I was a kid we called them toadstools; though I’ve never actually seen a toad sitting on one. I think you’re on to something about Santa though; it would explain a lot about him.
