Remains of Ferranti Engine House ... Lithgow Blast Furnace

Lithgow Blast Furnace (just west of the Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia) ... a site which is now the only remaining relic of Australia’s iron-making history. Walls are barely standing – these structures are a sad shell of what they were. The Furnace was established in 1886 by William Sandford, and it continued production until 1928 when the entire industry was moved to Port Kembla on the South Coast.

Geek info: Handheld, shutter priority, f/8, ISO 160, WB cloudy, Metering centre weighted. Photomatix HDR from a single jpeg (1/3 EV) and tweaked in CS3.

It was another that was a tossup between colour and B&W – I like both. You would love this place – masses of old brickwork and crumbling structures! Thanks for the kind words.

Marvelous presentation, Rosalie. What a beautiful building. I hope someone restores it. It is too beautiful and historic to lose! Amazing they built such an artistic structure for a blast furnace. Wonderful history lesson.

  • Rosalie Dale IPA replied

This has been crumbling since 1928 – at least it hasn’t been bulldozed I guess! It is a really unique relic, for Australia. Thanks Sue for the encouragement.

Hi Rosalie, this is really excellent. My daughter brought back a then and now photographic record of Sydney from her recent trip there. It is really facinating. Must check if this is included

The old photos on the signs around the park are just fascinating – the area used to be such a HUGE mass of buildings and machinery – so impressive. Very sad to see it so delapidated.

A wonderful capture, Rosalie. Great lighting and your legendary and excellent processing really enhances the brickwork and the sky here.
Great work, and good history lesson.

  • Rosalie Dale IPA replied

Thanks Keld – a wonderfully fascinating place to visit, and the murky weather that came and went all day gave reasonable clouds.

    A photographers dream eh.
Fabulous shot of the ‘remains’ Rosalie.

  • Rosalie Dale IPA replied

Absolutely stunning Gail – although I didn’t see the one single ‘entry prohibited’ sign at first so I did venture in and get some amazing shots through the windows and arches … taking life in hands as there were huge holes and ditches. . . I am surprised it is not behind a big fence!
