Gladesville Hospital Cameo No 1
A great turnout of Redbubblers met at Gladesville Mental Hospital this morning for some photo opportunities – this is a little nook in one of the delapidated buildings. Thanks to Philip and Kaz for organising the day.
Gladesville Mental Hospital (formerly Tarban Creek Lunatic Asylum) operated from c.1838-
Surviving records cover c.1822-1985
In 1838 the lunatic asylum was moved from Liverpool to Tarban Creek, Gladesville and the first patients were transferred from Liverpool Asylum and the Female Factory, Parramatta. It accepted patients from Victoria up until 1848 when the Yarra Bend asylum was opened. By the mid 1960s the institution was known simply as Gladesville Hospital. In 1993 premises at Gladesville Hospital and Macquarie Hospital were revoked as hospitals, and were amalgamated to form the Gladesville Macquarie Hospital.
HDR image processed in Photomatix from a single jpeg (with 3 exposures 1/3) then finished in CS3.

hey busy lady, beautiful composition, glad you had a good morning, looks like you cleaned up before you took this
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
Wow everyone’s quick off the mark – thought you’d be having a few zzzzzz’s after all the foot slog Kaz!! Mmmmmm I moved the basket but I didn’t sweep (I’m allergic to housework – litter is hidden in the shadows perhaps!!!) ... thanks for the visit AND for the outing Karen!
Maximus
Visited people in there in times past, bloodly terrible, but this is a great image. :)
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
Hi Max – didn’t get into many buildings but this one yielded a gem or two. Some of the activities there in the past were barbaric! Thanks for the encouragement mate.

I hated going there to visit. So depressing. :)
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
Imagine living in there!
Glenn Alderson
Looks like a very interseting place, a lot of unhappy history in those walls I guess.
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
Looking into underground dungeons where the worst cases were kept I found quite distressing! Thanks for the visit Glenn.
Maximus
I don’t know how anyone ever got well there. :)
Hans Kawitzki

Rosalie Dale IPA replied
I was pleased with how this came up Hans – thank you for the compliment!
LindaMcCarthy
You did a superb job on this, Rosalie. Yes, “haunting” is the word.
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
It was quite dusty and delapidated but some of the ‘stuff’ didn’t appear to be too old … strange mix of junk! I’m pleased you caught the atmosphere from the shot Linda.
Josie Jackson
Your very good at this “composition” work Rosalie, great colours in this, you’ve made a lovely picture out of a very depressing place.
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
I like the challenge of making a ‘nothing’ into a ‘something’ Josie so I’m pleased you feel this way. Thank you for your kind words

Beautiful shot Rosalie, but I am a bit confused….. do you want us to start calling you the chair lady???? lololol…. just jokes dear!!! ;-)
Certainly not joking about the mental state of the people that were here though!!!
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
Oh Julie we had fun with all the old benches that day – I guess a chair was just the natural progression!!! Thanks for the encouragement

To take the mundane and make it into a work of art requires the eyes and hands of an artist which, of course, you are. The lighting on the chair is perfect and, for me, that is part of the genius of this image.

Dave your replies are a work of art in themselves … thank you my friend for taking time to give such a comprehensive comment. I am honoured that this pleases you!

Lois Bryan
Rosalie, this is an absolutely magnificent image!!! Golden, glowing magic … this is what photography is to me … finding the extraordinary beauty in what truly is the ordinary, and in this case certainly tragic, bits and pieces of our everyday lives. Not that Gladesville represents our everyday, thank heavens, but the objects you’ve so breathtakingly captured do, of course. Congratulations, this is being used in the Mornings & Evenings group’s example for their latest contest!! Gotta fav this baby!!!!
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
You are very kind Lois – thank you so much!

Michael Matthews
A relatively simple subject made to look beautiful & fascinating. Great work. Any hints on the treatment or is it a secret ? HDR + ?
Rosalie Dale IPA replied
Thanks Michael!! Firstly HDR (3 images from the one jpeg) – then some fiddle with curves in CS3 – it would be interesting to re-process it just as a RAW image and compare how it comes up actually…I always shoot using both.
