There are more than 700 species of eucalyptus. They have many local names, like gum trees, mallee, box, ironbark, stringybark, and ash. The prominent tree in the picture is loosing it’s bark for a renewal.

Lost among the pines in the gentle slopes of time
alien to the needles soft and green
the mighty yellow gum stands tall and full of pride
nowhere else on earth is it seen
The strips of papery bark lay shredded on the ground
littering the cushion of withered foreign spikes
for all it’s mighty presence it is the minority to be found
loosing out to others for it’s rites
and folks play Spot the Aussie looking for the telltale signs
of indigenous or descent from convict stock
but the uniqueness of our flora seen here between the pines
will be starved and overtook by pine and rock
There is much to be said of the leveling of the fields
global united peoples to survive the race
but to loose the unique beauty our isolation yields
is a price too harsh to pay for any case
