They had been at it for what seemed like hours now.
April hide feebly on the floor underneath her bed. Clutching her tebby bear with all her might. Staring out at the light seeping in from the closed door, she could she the shadows of her mummy arguing with a stranger just outside. She didn’t know why her mummy had told her to hide, something to do with her Friday night job.
The door burst open as they entered the room. She slapped her hand over her trembling mouth, inhaling deeply.
She winced as the man forced her mummy onto the bed. The bulge of her body almost pinning her back to the floor.
The man continued screaming. Something about payments. Her mummy was hysterical, pleading that she didn’t know anything.
April was confused, she wanted to know what was happening. Resting her teddy over her shoulder, she reached up and hugged the bulge that was her mummy. She closed her eyes, tried to block out the screaming. She whispered, softer than a feather, “I got you, mummy. I won’t let go”
The sound of the gun shot thundered through the air. The bullet penetrated the mothers chest, through the matteress and exploded inside the teddy bears head. Creating a cloud of fluff that filled the space around Aprils frozen body. Her eyes cracked wide open, as she felt the earth give way beneath her. For some reason, she couldn’t feel her mummy anymore, just the lifeless bulge. Blood began to drip down through the matteress, mixing with the tears that flowed effortlessly down Aprils face.
The man left the room, forgetting what happened. I would be years before April could do the same.
