Giant Pandas, one of the world’s most endangered mammals are considered to be one of China’s, if not the world’s, greatest treasures. This high profile bear has become a beacon for worldwide conservation efforts and a symbol of the World Wide Fund for Nature. With their teddy bear looks and gentle nature, Giant Pandas are perhaps the most famous of the world’s endangered species. The Giant Panda is the rarest member of the bear family. A robust and solitary animal that doesn’t hibernate in winter like the other six bear species, and requires a den for its young. A lone male panda dominates large residental territory in which several female pandas reside. The female lives alone in her domain and is hostile to any other female intruders. Native to Western China and Tibet and once common throughout southwest China, northern Myanmar and Vietnam, today they are confined to remote fragmented fog-bound mountain forests in China. The bamboo that makes up 99 per cent of their diet is a poor source of nutrition. Giant Panda’s need to eat up to 18kg a day to gain enough sustenance from it. Bamboo forests are increasingly fragmented, leaving pandas isolated on small reserves – struggling to find food or mates. They spend up to 24 hours each day feeding on plants and bamboo with a life expectancy of 30 years. Habitat degradation and fragmentation is especially dangerous for Giant Pandas, as they must adjust to the life cycle of bamboos, which flower and die periodically. Commercial logging, illegal hunting and poaching threaten the Giant Panda with extinction. Protecting Giant Pandas in their natural habitat is indisputably the highest priorty in the conservation of this endangered species.
