Shopping with Mum
Taken in Brussels city centre in 1997, I sat opposite this lovely shopping arcade and hunkered down trying to be all Lee Friedlander and stuff, cutting and intersecting shoppers with the odd car crossing the zebra. When I spotted this kid crossing with her Mom I saw that the roof of the mall was going to sit just above her head, I thought I’ll snap her just as it fits her like a crown or a halo. I was too early. I still love this photo for her almost unreadable face, tranquil, bored, insistent, content? I’m not sure but the girl shopping with the unseen formidable presence of her mother is one of my favourite photos.
Shopping with Mum belongs to the following groups:

The shot to me, mirrors the Huynh Cong (“Nick”) infamous Vietnam shot, taken after the air strike on a village. Even the guy in the background with the bag, mirrors the troops.
Superb composition Phillip

This is a great shot Philip. My eye also gets drawn to the guy on the right with his foot in the air. : ) The mother, daughter and him form a diagonal across the image.

I like the unreadable expression that you have described – it really does make you wonder about her feeling at the time.

Thanks all. Very interesting comparison MattT I think I know the pic you are taking about, naked child fleeing village with napalm burns?

That is so expressive…that look could be on so many faces all throughout the world. Very beautiful!

The expression is excellent in this shot. As you said, I love the unseen presence of the Mother, out of frame.

This shot is worth of MAGNUM photo agency. someone like Henri Cartier Bresson. You have caught that rare quality of the subject seeing to be unaware you were there yet it seeing like you were standing right in front of them. Huge congratulations
Philip Rogan replied
Wow! thats one hell of a compliment and I will accept it as it makes me feel darned good and having had a quick look at your portfolio before I hit the hay I think I can take it seriously too. many many thanks!

As I was culling the photos from Kairos group this photo really stood out as the type of shot Kairos is about., Great shot Phil.

Many thanks for that comment Andy as I waited at this intersection in Brussels on bended knee for about 15 minutes waiting and shooting (shot 10 frames I think), waiting and shooting and I knew I had her when she walked into shot. I loved her expression and was able to get off my knee then. Cheers!
