St. Olaf's - The Old Rock Church by

Texas Historical Marker Info:

Marker #: 5035005416
Year Dedicated: 1974
The Rock Church – St. Olaf Lutheran Congregation – Built in 1886 of native stone by architect Andrew Mickelson and his brothers, Christian and Ole Mickelson. It originally had a dirt floor and planks laid on wooden kegs for pews. The bell was acquired in 1897. The church served the Norwegian settlers of this area, who were members of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church of Norse (6 miles east). In 1902, the growth of the community necessitated separation from the Norse church, and the St. Olaf congregation was organized. A new edifice was erected in Cranfills Gap (4 miles west) in 1917, and this church has since been used only for special services. Incise on back: In Memory of Otto H. Reesing 1890-1974

wow Terence … this is just an incredible image … it’s amazing to me that such a place even exists … so isolated and lovely!!!! Gorgeous capture of the light!!!!!

  • Thanks, Lois. I was so very pleased my wife told me about it. One of the people from the area was very close to her at one time, now deceased.

    That’s gorgeous.

The colours of th shot above are much better than the ones on the illustrated card!

  • Thanks, Nik. The church on the card is the one to where the congregation moved. I am not all that pleased with that picture. I’ll hopefully will take a better photo sometime, as it is not all that far away!

Good capture of this little church and love the way you have the light and I assume sunset off to the left!! Great work! Is it a stone church?

  • Thanks, Ciana. I is made of stone. I took a picture of the inside, as well, and plan to upload it sometime soon! Keep an eye out, my friend.
