Navajo Arts Mall

On the road into the east entrance to the South Rim area of Grand Canyon National Park, you travel through a lot of Navajo land. Although you will likely see a plethora of stands almost everywhere in the Four Corners area, at a couple of really scenic points along the Colorado Chasm there is a conglomeration of shops. This shot is taken from the viewpoint area back through the shops. They actually have it organized so that you have to walk through the gauntlet of shops to reach the viewpoint. It really bothered neither myself or my wife, Susan, as we appreciate the ingenuity and skills of the Navajo people and spend what we can for the wonderful art pieces they sell. In my opinion, almost anything you find is reasonably priced. The vendors are always very friendly and put no pressure on you, so it never hurts you to look.

On this day, it was bitterly cold, so my wife and I had said that if we saw any vendors that were braving the cold to market their wares, we were going to stop and buy something. You see no one at any of the stands photo simply because those who were marketing wares on this day waited patiently in their heated cars and trucks until someone ventured out to look through the items set out on the tables.

Nice perspective, Terrence. And, thank you for the story behind it!

When I thought of the perfect image for the Spirit of the Southwest, I first thought of the red rocks and cacti, but then remembered the many Navajo roadside shops seen almost everywhere in the Northern part of Arizona.
