Mending

it’s time to sit in a dark room again
with a couple of things to throw
and wait to feel what comes back
it’s time to take parts of me
and pack them away for hiding
left out too long always seems
to add more chips and cracks
I hate that room
but I hate wounds more

it’s time to let solitaire
win every game again
knowing the queen of hearts
is missing and lost
counting the whys until the number
falls because of the weight
musty smelly room
when the mending is done
I’ll shut the door behind me
with a slam

Sometimes that slamming door can bring a sad release – accompanied by guilt – as a corridor reaches out ahead with windows mostly shaded and dark. Melancholy mixes with hope as, moving on, I find chinks of light seeping through those shaded panes … and encounter others, like me, who have chosen at last to move on, and mend and heal.

This is excellent, Roger. It’s so honest, so eminently felt and feel-able. It is what you and I and six billion other people are when we think no one is looking. Thank you.
