Daddies And Sons

written with my dad and my two sons in mind
later a good friend ( Don Falk ) put it to music where it became
a number “one” hit three separate times on MP3.com
it’s very special to me

daddies and sons they like the same things
chocolate chip cookies and flying machines
things that go boom and a real messy room
staring and wondering ‘bout the man in the moon

boys need to know how to slay fiery dragons
learn how to fish and pull big red wagons
learn how to hike and ride that new bike
and when they fall down dad will make it alright

it’s written in stone down through the ages
in so many books and on so many pages
how dads teach and sons learn and that’s the way it’s done
there’s something so special “bout daddies and sons

dad checks for monsters under the bed
that’s where they’re hiding or so his son says
say a prayer for safe keeping for that boy who is sleeping
a chip off the old block is what dad is thinking

boys they grow up as their dads they grow older
dads they get tired while their sons grow much bolder
but sons always know the right way to go
thanks to their dad who’s their one real hero

daddies and sons they share the same visions
learning to deal with life’s big decisions
and when it’s all over and every thing’s done
there’s nothing as loving as daddies and sons

yes, it’s written in stone down through the ages
in so many books and on so many pages
how dads teach and sons learn and that’s the way it’s done
there’s something so special ‘bout daddies and sons

Wow, this is so wonderful. As a dad for 2 boys (teens now) I can relate to every word and every sentence. It brought smiles, tears and reflection on my own actions as a father. amazing writing and so to the point.

You make that special relationship between those two people come alive so well that a person who has never been blessed with a minute of such an experience will feel its loss and or crave it. I have three boys of mine and my life is quite ‘filled’ if you follow my drift! Lovely piece very well written.

So agree that sons have much of their personalities and emotions shaped by their fathers. Think it is so important for parents to realise the affect they have on their kids. In my opinion the best any of us can do for others is to be true and honest. I believe that many men are sterotyped to act tough and strong but at times pay too little attention to being strong emotionally.

Having said this your words are very beautiful. Hopefully they will inspire Dad’s to be the best they can be for themselves and their sons.

Dads really do teach their sons how to act and be like their fathers. It is the wises of Dads that teach their sons well. Excellent writing, well done.
