A Night of Blues...A Song Sung

the room is sultry – dim and smoke filled -
salty beads of sweat fall from brows onto
chests from those that dance, making their
way to a stained damp floor – swaying – grinding
they dance to forget – they cut loose to live -
the night belongs to scotch….and the blues

feel the drive of the bass line
thump – thump – thump – thump
dirty note fingered – thump – thump
once per second – thump – thump
slow – thump – thump – thump
sad – thump – thump – thump

hear the electric guitars ripping cry
screeeeeeech – sustained
a blues man’s cry – screeech – sustained
stretching a note till the finger bleeds
screech–screeeeeeeeeech – sustained

thump – thump – thump – thump

the old man on the skins – eyes closed
rims the snare every second and forth beat
- – - bop – - – bop – - – bop – - – bop
he sticks the high hat with accented triplets
tat tat tat- tat tat tat –tat tat tat – tat tat tat
the blues rhythm – tat tat ta bop – tat tat tat bop

the man wipes his mouth with a sweat
filled rag – his head moves with the pulse
of the bass – he grips the spit filled microphone
as low moans begin to rise from deep within
a pain wrenched gut – moans he has lived –
moans to sing about – a blues mans song

tat tat tat bop – thump – tat tat tat bop – thump –

he sings -
good is gonna get ya
when the sun is bright

devils gonna get ya
when it turns to night

beer is like a sunset
or somethin’ in between

it starts out feelin’ good as dreams
then turn to be so mean

drinkin’ beer blues
I got the beer bottle blues

thump – thump – thump – thump
tat tat tat bop – thump – thump

the electric guitar cries for thirty-six measures
as the nasty bass line makes love to the skin
players beat – those that dance are lost in a
trance – releasing frustrated emotions as more
scotch is poured – and they sway and grind
and the blues man – he belts out the verse again

A Night of Blues...A Song Sung by

This was inspired from a movie I recently
watched – a scene in an old blues house.

Also tried to see if I could get the feel
of a blues song across in a writing.
Tap with your foot, nod your head to the
beat, hear the music – and try to feel it.

If ya like the blues – it will be easy.
oh yeah!!

Just a guy who loves to write; poetry, lyrics, short stories and random thoughts… it is my passion. Photography is my second passion as I love to capture the world around me… to make time stop and to savor a subject forever.

I was totally there! Those lyrics sounded like a Robert Johnson numbr. I’ve forgotten how good it feels to bend n bleed, playing an acoustic too long, callouses too thick.

  • Hey thanks Jami – I’d be the guy on them skins – played for years!
Come on by any time – be a good thing.
