In the West End of the Shire - by

In the far West end of the Shire
there is a place where Hobbits go
Tis a fun but good little hike
just past some green hills, three or so

Along the trail songs they sing
play rhyming games just for fun
they eat first lunch along the way
wanting more, second lunch is begun

They cool their feet at water’s edge
Hide and seek played amongst the trees
they cook up mushrooms that are found
that leaves a scent upon the breeze

Visions are dancing in their heads
as tales are told of long ago
keeping alive the memories
of Sam, Gandalf and brave Frodo

As they frolic, a swoosh is heard
in midst a patch of wild berries
most likely rabbits having sport
but conclude its elves or fairies

They roll on the ground laughing hard
as into the creek one does fall
but he soon climbs out, fish in hand
having last laugh on one and all

One starts to play a wooden flute
as two keep time with clapping hands
a spinning dance the rest do start
the winner is, he who still stands

Time has come to start the hike home
but wishing longer they could stay
for so much fun is had by all
while at this place where Hobbits play

Place: The Shire in Eriador
(but strangely looks exactly like a creek in Louden, Tennessee, USA)

Camera: Canon SD850-IS
Processed in Photoshop

Beautiful capture and treatment; love the lighting and colors; it does look like a little fantasy land like the Hobbit’s land :) – lovely poem too.

  • Thanks Mui-Ling. It is what I thought of as I was editing the pic… kept visualizing Hobbits running amongst the trees, hence the writing and the title of this pic. Hobbits makes for happy thoughts, bet you know what I mean :)

  • Thanks so much for this honor. I have a special place in my heart for Bits &Pieces. My (and our) dear departed friend Trisha (Pagly) and I started this group over 4 years ago. I am so happy it continues and has flourished so nicely. The best to you and to B&P :)

I love this – the blue of the water, the pink wild flowers and the white bark of the trees are an amazing combination. I think this would make a fabulous painting too. Love it.

  • I’m with you about the painting. I don’t have the talent with brushes and paint but I tried to process it to look that way. Thanks so much for such a nice comment.

I wanna go there. It sounds like my kinda town:) Seriously I loved the story and will probably re read it before bed. I once watched a movie at my grandmothers house called Darby O’Gill and The Little People and this story reminds me of it. I watched it several times while I was there. I love magical places because it is as if you have release the chains on your imagination and let it run free. This is wonderful and delightful to read Rog

  • Darby O’Gill and The Little People… I know that movie so well (Sean Connery before the 007 films), the elusive pot of gold and Darby’s quest for it. Magical places, where good always wins out and happiness abounds…ahhhhhh :) Thanks Donna for the viewing and the read, must mostly for your love of imagination where hearts and souls are free… such a special place :)
