The Shepherdess and her Valley
I took a trip up to the Dartmoor National Park this week and stopped for a while to admire the beautiful view over Widecombe valley with the ancient moorland village of Widecombe-in-the-Moor nestling far below me.
After a short time I started talking to an elderly shepherdess who tends her sheep on the side of the valley, well I thought she was too good a subject to not include in the image so I asked if she would mind if I included her in a couple of my images, she smiled and said, “You probably will anyway”, well this is what I came up with, hope you like the view of the heart of the Dartmoor National Park and of course that element of the way of life of the hill farmers.

Rod, what a lovely scene so wonderfully captured. It might looked the same a couple hundred years ago. Regards, Vadim
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Vadim, you are so right with that comment, little has changed on Dartmoor and the way of life for the hill farmers and shepherds in generations,
Regards, Rod.
Jane Best
Wonderful photo and commentary. Having the shepherdess with her dog and sheep in the foreground adds life and vibrancy to the already beautiful landscape scene in the background.
I would LOVE to have her job!
rodsfotos replied
She seems to be thriving on the open air life, I’d guess she was well into her seventies and still very active, thank-you very much Jane,

Gorgeous Rod! Your country is so beautiful, and the shepherdess, and her working dog biside her really make this shot!! I love the castle in the B/g too. I had to view this beauty large!
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Carolyn, the building is the parish church in the distance, quite grand for a little village and locally nicknamed the little cathedral on the moors,
Regards, Rod.
Malcolm Chant

Superb capture Rod! Stuuning views from up there – is that just above the Rugglestone Inn (great pub!) – the inclusion of the sheherdess adds very well to the patchwork of fields :)
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Phil, just off the main road down to Widecombe, turn into the left a little way down from the top of the hill, and yes, I’ve enjoyed a few glasses in the Rugglestone after walking the moors, it has become a bit busier than it used to be though,
Regards, Rod.
Tom Gomez
This is a wonderful image Rod, the shepherdess and her working dog are a wonderful foregound interest to that superb view and the beautiful church tower in the background adds another great dimension to the shot. A definate fave for me …

Just wonderful Rod. I have a painting of this very scene, minus shepherdess of course, handed down from my parents and hanging on our lounge wall. As a sales rep working out of Newton Abbot I used to have weekly calls at Widecombe, summer and winter alike and it’s always been high on our list of favourite places in the world. As a result there’s only one place for this shot of yours to go!!! Guess where! I’m surprised Chris allows you to go round chatting up stray shepherdesses like this though!! (I wanted to make a crack about a crook but will leave that to Don) How is Chris by the way? I’ve been thinking and wondering. All best wishes, Peter
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Peter, I have long admired this view down the hill to Widevombe, I was amazed at the level of detail in the full sized version, every sfeep and cow in the distant fields and people walking around the village, quite a co-incidence that you have it framed on your wall.
Yes Chris seems to be well, she hasn’t had an official letter from the biopsy yet but has been told it all looked well, many thanks for your concern my friend,
Regards, Rod.
georgieboy98
I must tell you a little story about Widecombe. The ancient post mistress back in the 1960’s was a Miss Harvey, who also happened to be the ancient organist in the Church! I don’t know whether she had a crush on the vicar of the day or not but shall never forget her telling me that he had got himself married. “The dirty old man – I would never have thought it of him!!” was the way she described the happy event! LOL Peter
rodsfotos replied
LOL., seems like he snuffed her candle out in a moment, sadly the post office has just closed this year, a sad sign of the times and a bitter blow to the locals who depended on it for their everyday provisions as well, we always used to stop there for a hot pasty if we had been on the moors,
Regards, Rod.

Wonderful Rod, now you’re just making me homesick for Delightful Devon again. This is a cracking capture of Widecombe in the moor, I’ve painted and sold a watercolour of this one. Fantastic. Don.
rodsfotos replied
Devon is still here whenever you feel like a visit Don, it is a particularly scenic part of the moors, I did mean to take a few fully zoomed in telephoto view of the village from that elevated viewpoint but somehow with the excitement of getting the lady in the scene it escaped my memory, one for the future perhaps, many thanks my friend,
Regards, Rod.
Catherine Veal
This is just wonderful Rod, and I bet you had a great conversation with her.x
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Catherine, I went out on the moors mainly to get this scene that I have photographed countless times before but not with the D300, the lady was a wonderful stroke of good fortune,

Great shot Rod – went through widecombe on Friday, then walked the Templar way from Haytor down to Teignmouth.
rodsfotos replied
Thanks so much Rob, it’s a grand walk down the Templar Way, still quite a few of the granite rails used for moving the granite blocks from the quarry to the river for the building of the old London Bridge as you probably well know,
Regards, Rod.

A beautiful capture of the wonderful looking Dartmoor Rod, Such a lovely view you had from up there with that charming village below you. A great idea to have the shepherdess and her dog in the picture, it adds to the beauty of it. One can imagine that this spot hasn’t changed a bit in many many years. Thanks for sharing and many regards,Henri.
rodsfotos replied
Hello Henri, thank-you very much for the wonderful comment my friend, Dartmoor is a vast area of natural beauty and a more than welcome retreat away from the crowds who visit the coastal resorts in our area, I spend quite a lot of my free time there during the Summer months,
Regards, Rod.

Oh to be in England…this scene brings back many memories, I remember the Dartmoor ponies….....You have beaten me to it, I have wanted for ages to take a shot of the Shepherds we have locally, we have quite a few flocks of sheep, that roam all over the place but I have yet to get a photo of a shepherd they are such characters. Anyway this is such a wonderful capture Rod so full of detail…I love it…...jacquei
