Up the Garden Path

Ancient Bridge Cottage in the delightful old world village of Buckland-in-the-Moor in Devon’s Dartmoor National Park after a recent complete no expense spared refurbishment, including a new thatched roof sits in a beautiful natural woodland garden.

I am sure many the romantics amongst us have dreams of living in a character filled chocolate box cottage like this, I know I certainly would.

Thank-you very much Dave, it is a beautiful old cottage and the tiny village is more than worth visiting, there are very few visitors to it even though it is not far off the beaten path, this is one of three such old thatched cottages in a shared large parkland garden with a stream running through it,

  • rodsfotos replied

Hi Barbara, I do dream about having a cottage like this for retirement, sadly this one would cost the best part of £1M.,so the dream goes on unless I win the lottery, many thanks my friend,
    Regards, Rod.

  • Squealia

    Squealia

Gorgeous shot, yes in a dream I would love to live there, but my fear would be fire! I’d be terrified the roof caught fire! Houses burn quickly as they are, but teh thatched would be an added risk in my opinion! We are planning to move to Devon and rent but i have discounted thatched cottages!

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you very much, yes thatched houses would be a bit of a disaster if they were to catch fire but the chances of it happening are just as low as with any conventional house, I do hope you find a place to live in Devon, it’s a wonderful part of the country,
    Regards, Rod.

  • vadim19

    vadim19

Wonderful capture, Rod! Such a beautiful English cottage. It’s probably a very special feeling to live in such a place. Regards, Vadim

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you very much Vadim, many people seem to love the old traditional thatched cottages and dream that they could live in one, they are so homely in the Winter in particular with a log fire burning in them, I used to live in an old cottage and so regret selling it,
    Regards, Rod.

  • Michael Oubridge

A fabulous capture Rod, i am just off out to buy a EuroMillion ticket, it has a £49million jackpot tonight, might just be enough to purchase this dream property.

Well the first million will be needed to get this one Michael so that leaves you with a miserly £48M, just remember your friends MATE, LOL., many thanks my friend, it has that want to live there appeal,

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you very much Ann, well this one would suit you perfectly, it’s just below the higher slopes of Dartmoor in a sheltered valley and only about twenty cottages in the little village, just the price tag that might be a problem to so many of us,
    Regards, Rod.

    ( just kidding )
On one of my trips to the UK I visited the council at Poole, and they took me to a village called Abbotsbury that was being re-thatched.
What an experience it was to see the thatchers at work.

I learned so much that day.
    Brilliant.

  • rodsfotos replied

Hi Larry, many thanks my friend and for the link to Abbotsbury, I was on Dartmoor on Wednesday and stopped in the little village of Ponsworthy, near Widecombe, thatchers were working on a couple of old cottages so I had to just admire their craftsmanship,

Hi Rod, you’ve managed it once again my friend. I’m feeling homesick for Dartmoor once again:-) LOL> Fantastic capture of a lovely old thatched cottage so typical of Devon. I love the well kept look of this place. You know Rod, I’d love to live in a place like that, but I’d make the rooms much bigger, probably do a complete rebuild. After serving in submarines for so long, I need large rooms now. Still it looks fantastic, and you’ve captured another winner of that I’m sure. An instant FAV for me. Regards, Don.

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you very much Don, my previous home was an old cottage of similar age to this one but had a Delabole slate roof rather than the thatch, I do so miss the character that it had with exposed timbers on the ceilings but they were a lot lower than modern day ceilings,

    Lois Bryan

So so gorgeous … when I saw this one in the Cottage Style features I hopped right over here and left a comment … pushed “add” and RB went on hiatus, lol!!!! So here I am again … still enraptured with this fabulous image!! Perfection in construction design and landscaping … and perfection in photographic art!!!! LOVE it!!!

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you so much for the wonderful comment Lois, I have had the same thing happen to me a couple of times after writing a long well thought out comment.
It is a beautiful old cottage but sadly not mine,
    Regards, Rod.

Rod – I swear you must be getting commissions from the Devon Tourism Board! Your shots are so wonderful and really make the viewer want to be there! Congratulations on the well-deserved features!

  • rodsfotos replied

I only wish I was Triciamary, only this week I happened to find out that a local website had been using some of my images on their home page without my permission, they were removed with an apology rather quickly, GRRRR.
Thank-you so much for the wonderful comment, appreciated as always,
    Regards, Rod.

Seriously cute, Rod.I expected to see pixies frollicking in the garden! It’s just like a story book cottage, although that thatched roof looks like it’s been extensively “hairsprayed”. My mother (who grew up near here) says that thatched roofs attract mice and rats, but they’re great to look at.

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you very much Bevan, your Mother is right about them attracting rodents but these days the reeds are often treated with anti-rodent and fire retardants before use,
    Regards, Rod.

Well, when your name goes on the title deeds Rod, you’ll be needing a gardener. (waving hands madly here) I’ll even do it for peanuts! Well,....maybe not peanuts, but a devonshire tea served daily, would seal the deal! ;-))

  • rodsfotos replied

LOL., Thank-you very much Rob, if this was my cottage you would certainly be hired to nurture the gardens and cream teas would be a small price to pay,
    Regards, Rod.
