Lands End, Cornwall in May

Lands End, Cornwall in May

Lands End is the most Westerly point on the UK mainland and much visited for that fact and for it’s rugged beauty.
The Atlantic ocean has shaped the cliffs over countless years and many ships have been lost against these treacherous shorelines.

I took this image in May 2009, looking towards the first and last house in England and some four miles behind it is the promontory Cape Cornwall.

It was a beautiful calm early Summer’s day and the pink seathift adorned the clifftops like a natural garden.

So much better than the out of shot monstrosity that DeSavary has got there.

Oh … Rod … if I ever get to this amazing spot on our Good Earth … I know I’ll thank God for your images that will have led me there!!!!! Such a sense of ease and freedom from your photography … I feel like if I spread my arms I’d soar right out to sea!!!!!!

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you so much Lois, I know you’d love it at Lands End, most people visit it as a sort of Pilgrimage just because of it being the most Westerly point but soon fall in love with the natural beauty,
    Regards, Rod.

Wonderful capture Rod, can you still walk from Sennen Cove and avoid the entrance fee?

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you very much Howard, yes you can still enter from the Sennen end but the entry fees are no longer levied and car parking is now down to three pounds so it’s a much more attractive venue to take in without prohibitive costs,

  • rodsfotos replied

Hi Barbara, thank-you very much indeed, yes you can certainly smell the salt in the air there, it made a nice change to be there without the wind blowing hard as it normally does, we were so lucky with the weather when we were in Cornwall,

I also appreciate your informative dialogue to accompany the image. Your love of the natural beauty around you is evident and resonates with those of us that see it too. :))

Another wonderful capture of this rugged coastline Rod. I can almost feel how windy it is! I just love that you’ve included the pink flowers in the foreground – that added touch of beauty that a lot of people would not think to include in the frame. Cheers, S.

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you very much Sandra, the pink seathrift is at it’s best in late May and to be honest, part of the reason I go to Cornwall at that time, it would be a sin to not include it in a composition like this,
    Regards, Rod.

    georgieboy98

Beautiful photo, as is to be expected from you and that pink seathrift provides a wonderful touch of contrasting colour. I still can’t get over what they have done commercially to Lands End though but this photo nicely cuts out the eyesores and leaves the view just as I have retained in my memory for all these years. Chris didn’t have to look for shelter this time then?? All the best, Peter

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you very much Peter, we got there late morning for a change and the light’s direction was better for the view without looking towards the commercial development that is IMO quite an unwanted eyesore on one of the UK’s most beautiful locations, one of the so called exhibitions had an entry fee of £10.95 per head, why would anyone want to go in there at that price with such beauty outside,
    Regards, Rod.

  • Trainman

    Trainman

An excellent take Rod but very surprised in the drop of the parking charges did some one tell the national trust on how greedy they have become.Regards Dave.

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you very much Dave, Lands End is privately owned these days by a Peter DeSavary, he has turned much of it into a theme park more like Butlins holiday camps with money as his only goal.
The car parking charges had to be dropped, a few years ago we went with four in the car and they wanted £4 for the car and another £4 for each passenger, like so many others, we turned away and returned in the evening when it was free,
    Regards, Rod.

Hi Rod as always your clarity and colour are beautiful and the lovely wildflowers around the rocks are so pretty, hard to think such pretty flowers will grow in such an exposed enviroment ! l will be standing in this very place sometime in November, l have chosen to spend a week in this area, l have many fond memories from childhood holidays down there and want to show my partner !l just hope the weather is kind to us but at that time of the year l think l am going to need to be rugged up very well :-)) .........Trudi

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you very much Trudi, November can be surprisingly good at times but I’d make sure you have something warm and waterproof just in case, if you want any suggestions on locations to visit a bit nearer the time, please don’t hesitate to ask, I’m sure it will a wonderful trip for both of you,

I always use Penzance as a base when I’m down there, if you haven’t already booked accommodation I can send you a link to a place I’ve used several times. (Self-catering cottage) near the harbour and some wonderful old Inns that do good meals.
Penzance is the end of the rail line from London and only 12 miles from Lands End as well as being well placed for the Lizard Peninsula, St.Ives and many small fishing villages, a hire car would be useful but buses run from Penzance in all directions.
    Check out,

the one I use is known as Pirate’s Cottage, you can search for it on that site..

Awesome view from Land’s End Rod, I love the clear blue sky and the deep blue of the Atlantic Ocean, the lovely pink flowers in the forground give a sense of beauty in a rather bleak rocky place. Land’s End, like Peter says, is spoiled by the commercial side. I didn’t pay to park there the last time, because I visited at 6.00am, but wish I’d waited for the light to get as clear as this. Marvellous and an instant FAV for me M8. Regards, Don.

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you very much Don, I’ve never been there as early as you were, I normally go in the evening to get that beautiful light just an hour or two before sunset, I was tempted in during the day this time with the much reduced parking charges and it was good to see it in full sunlight for a change, certainly a lot warmer during the daytime,
    Regards, Rod.

Great image of a very rugged area Rod. I like your saying ‘the first and last house’. I was wondering how these people make their living. it’s alright living there with nice weather but I wouldn’t want to be there in a storm.

  • rodsfotos replied

The house on the headland is called the first and last house in England John and visitors always stop to have a photo taken in front of it but it is only a tourist information and gift shop, it can be very wild there during a storm, many thanks my friend,
    Regards, Rod.

  • Magee

    Magee

Like Lynda, I’ve had more than one look myself. Rugged it certainly is! Pretty it is too, but I wonder why someone would build way out there, on seemingly the edge of the world, affording very little protection from the elements of nature. Fascinating stuff Rod, and another wonderful scene captured too my friend!

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you very much again Rob, I’m not sure of the history of the First and Last house ot even if it was ever used as a dwelling in the past but most visitors to Lands End have a souvenir photo taken standing in front of it these days.
The view in the opposite direction includes a more recent hotel and though it’s not included in the image below, there is a large commercial money-making complex directly behind it,
