Cadgwith, Cornwall

Cadgwith is a very beautiful and peaceful little fishing village situated on a sheltered cove a few miles from the Lizard Point.
Fishing has been the mainstay of local industry here since Medieval times and the village has been established since the sixteenth century.
Traditionally pilchards were the main catch of the local fishermen till recent years when overfishing depleted the stocks and now the boats fish exclusively for crabs and lobsters.
The steep shingled foreshore is used as a safe harbour for the small working fishing boats and they are pulled up it by a winch or a tractor.

Over recent years the village has become more dependent on tourism but it is good to see that it still remains full of old charm with many of the older houses having thatched roofs.

I took this image from a promontory known as The Todden, during my recent holiday, looking back to the boats and waterfront buildings, for me, this village is so much a part of old traditional Cornish life and very much worth a visit.

Superb capture of what I remember as a typical English fishing village, so full of life and wonderfully picturesque. Such a shame that there are not so many of these lovely places left now …

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you very much Tom, sadly these old villages are losing their old traditional ways of life and with it, much of their history, good that there are still a few where we can escape to.
For me, the best part of my visit was watching a couple of fishing boats landing and being hauled up the foreshore on a winch and listening to the Cornish fishermen’s accents,
    Regards, Rod.

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you very much Sandra, sadly this kind of village and traditional lifestyle of the people who live there are fast disappearing in almost every part of the world today so it makes it all the more special to visit and soak in the relaxed atmosphere,

I’m at serious risk of overdosing on quaint and rustic, Rod! This is a lovely portrait of life in a little Cornish village. I love the splashes of colour on the boats and equipment, and especially the dinky blue tractor.

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you so much Bevan, I watched as a couple of boats were being winched up the shingled foreshore and then realized that the boats had runners underneath them so they don’t wear the hull out, obviously built for this particular kind of landing,
    Regards, Rod.

Beautifully done Rod….I haven’t stopped here. I’ve been to Lizard point though. Maybe I should visit when I’m next in the area.

  • rodsfotos replied

    Regards, Rod.

  • Johnsart

    Johnsart

Hi Rod Thanks for sharing this image and the accompanying story. Lots of these fishing villages have disappeared over the years. modern big fleets have taken over and over fished the ocean. Tourism is often the only source of income for these man. It’s a pity but “that’s life”.

  • rodsfotos replied

Thankfully there are still a hard chore of small boats fishing with lobster and crab pots from the village so it does keep it’s traditional way of life more than so many of the other villages that have become tourist resorts, over fishing from large factory ships has become a major worldwide problem.
They seem to have a good balance of traditional and tourist trade here that will hopefully see them through, many thanks John,
    Regards, Rod.

  • Trainman

    Trainman

An excellent take on a typical Cornish fishing village, i can remember visiting here in the early sixties before we were so rudely kicked off the railway system with all the closures, you have provided us with some very fond memories Rod thank you Regards Dave.

  • rodsfotos replied

Very little seems to have changed in Cadgwith over the years I’ve been visiting it Dave which goes back around 30 years, the pilchard fishing more or less came to a halt in the late fifties I’m told, quite a number of the cottages are now holiday cottages but the kind of tourists who stay at them go for the peaceful lifestyle rather than expecting resort facilities.
So pleased it brought back some pleasant memories for you, many thanks my friend,
    Regards, Rod.

Nice description and perfect shot,Rod; roofs are pops at me – is it rust?

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you very much Luda, the yellow/orange colour on the slate roofs is lichen, it grows on most of the seaside roofs as well as the rocks on the coast,
    Regards, Rod.

  • rodsfotos replied

I do sometimes worry that viewers can’t see the detail at this small resolution, thankfully your eyes are better than mine Lois, it does look so much better at full size but that’s around 12 times the size of my monitor, thank-you so much,

Great capture Rod ! Amitiés, Daffo

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you very much again Daffo, this little fishing village used to have many boats fishing for pilchards (you may know them as sardines), when the fish stocks were depleted most of the boats moved on to another port and the few that remain catch crabs and lobsters these days,
I do enjoy the peaceful atmosphere there on my visits,
    Regards, Rod.
