Cornish Highlanders
During my recent holiday to Cornwall, I was going down to Cape Cornwall, a few miles East of Land’s End on the North coast.
It was a beautiful late afternoon and on the way down to the Cape I looked over to my right and was delighted to see five highland cattle grazing, my immediate thoughts, as a Scot were, you’re not the only Scot in Cornwall.
In the background the Headland is know as Kenidjack Castle headland, you may just be able to see the ruins of the iron age fortress Kenidjack Castle high on the headland, well it certainly stands out viewed at the full resolution,

rodsfotos replied
Just trying to make you look forward to your holiday in Cornwall Lyn, my main purpose was to get some photos of Cape Cornwall but the monument on top had scaffolding all round it but this surprise more than made up for it, many thanks,
Regards, Rod.

The cows look right at home there. They’re quite clearly more interested in the grass than that lovely view!
rodsfotos replied
I thought that too Denise but none the less was most surprised to see them so far from the Scottish highlands, many thanks,
Regards, Rod.
E.R. Bazor
Wonderful photo!
Love the shaggy cows.
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Estes,

Excellent depth of colour in this shot Rod – beautiful !
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Chris, the polarizer is worth it’s weight in gold on a sunny day,
Regards, Rod.
missmoneypenny
Thanks Rod – I’d completely forgotten I have a polarizer – I’ll have to put it in my camera case :O)
rodsfotos replied
I never take an outdoor photograph without one when it’s sunny Chris, so much better to get the colour depth on camera rather than trying to add it in post editing.
PrairieRose
I LOVE the scenery so very much dear Rod BUT I have to tell you I’m absolutely intrigued with the beautiful cattle you have in your neck of the woods….......such splendid beasts living large with so many different shades of colour…........I would love to visit just to be able to see your beautiful bovines!!!
Cheerio! Rosie xxoo
rodsfotos replied
Hi Rosie, they are a Scottish breed, Highland Cattle and are normally found in the part of Scotland I grew up in, I didn’t expect to see them down in Cornwall, as far away from Scotland as you can go in the UK., many thanks my friend,
Regards, Rod.

Magee
Oooooh!! Heilan Coo’s!! How I love these critters!! I had to fly to NZ for my very first look at one Rod, and try as I might, I couldn’t manage to fit one in the over-head luggage compartment, to bring one home. :-/ I’m sorry! I know the scenery must be wonderful, but I simply can’t see beyond these five hairy beauties!!
rodsfotos replied
You must get a bigger suitcase Robyn, they are adorable creatures and certainly the last thing I was expecting to see on a headland on the Cornish coast.
If you go up to Tom Gomez comment above, he has a link to a beautiful image of them that he took, many thanks again my friend,
Regards, Rod.
Trudi's Images
This is beautiful Rod, l was photographng some highland cattle yesterday but the scenery of course was nowhere near as spectacular as this !! love where the old castle sits on the hill, what a vantage point ! as always wonderful work
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Trudi, I hope you have some good ones of the cattle to post.
I have never been up to the top of the headland where the castle is but have Googled the castle and there are a few photos of the ruins and the view from the top, perhaps next time I’m down there,

sigfusson
Fantastic shot Rod! What an amazing place. I’ll assume these beasts are relatively docile, as you seem to be quite close to them when you took the shot – those horns alone would make me keep back several hundred feet! LOL. Cheers, S.
rodsfotos replied
They are a very docile breed Sandra otherwise I wouldn’t have been so near to them, they were more interested in the lush grass than the photographer anyway, thanks so much,
Regards, Rod.
CarolM
I have never seen highland cattle. It appears that they have a lot of hair or mane on the face. I do see the castle. Once again, these colors are outstanding as is the composition. Your fantastice shots to Cornwall are making me want to visit there.
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Carol, yes highland cattle are a very hairy and hardy breed, also reputed to be the best beef cattle in the UK when they graze on the heather clad mountains of Scotland, personally, I just think they look lovely,
Regards, Rod.
Catherine Veal
this is beautiful Rod, didnt know you were a Scot. Where from? You must try and see the camels, you dont expect that down there, lol x
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Catherine, yes I was born in Moffat in the Lowlands then moved up to Inverness-shire as a toddler and lived there till I left school.
Next time I’m on the Lizard I’ll have to seek out those camels, hopefully Richard and yourself will be photographing them very soon,
Regards, Rod.

Trainman
What a stunning shot Rod and to have the Hielin Coos in the frame as well it has turned it into a proffesional shot, oh by the way Sylvia thought Tom was talking in Swahili in his comments on the cattle lol Regards Dave.
rodsfotos replied
Hi Dave, thank-you very much my friend, the Highland Cattle were such a surprise for me and I couldn’t resist a few shots with them grazing against the rugged coast, tell Sylvia, I know exactly what she means, my wife often struggles to understand certain Scottish accents,
Regards, Rod.
Wayne Holman
Highland cattle and camels in Cornwall, who’d have thought it, next thing you know there’ll be wallabies in Bodmin…...... Hold up…. there are! lol = )
This is such a stunning shot Rod, picture perfect and a fave mate = ))
rodsfotos replied
Whatever is Cornwall coming to Wayne, just had a look at the link on the wallaby on BBC newspage.
The Highland Cattle seemed to be happy in their coastal enclosure with a view but the grass seemed to be their main interest, many thanks my friend,
Regards, Rod.

Thank-you very much James,

georgieboy98
An incredibly beautiful scene Rod (the coast looks just like parts of ours – LOL) and these Highland cattle are popping up all over the place these days. I took a photo with Kenidjack Castle in it when we were last over there but with it being a dull, cow-less sort of day, it was not the best! Better not let Tainia see this!! Just wonderful. All the best, Peter
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Peter, I had gone down there to take some shots of Cape Cornwall but there was scaffolding all over the pinnacle so that ruled it out.
The highland cattle were more than compensation even if quite a surprise ro find them grazing there though, I have since been told that they graze and leave the kind of grass height that the Cornish Chough seems to like, there are a few nesting along this part of the coast and they are actively trying to encourage them back to Cornwall,
Regards, Rod.
Carol Barona
fantastic- love the different colors awesome dof
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much indeed Carol,
Regards, Rod.
SandraRos

Regards, Rod.

What a pleasing idyllic scene you’ve captured here Rod. All elements unite here perfectly and the cattle are placed superbly. >< Ron.
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Ron, it was a pleasant surprise to see the Highland Cattle there so I had to include them in the composition,
Regards, Rod.
Hans Goepel
Hi Rod! Beautifully captured!!
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Hans, the Highland Cattle were so much at home on the Cornish coast,
Regards, Rod.
henrihan
This is a wonderful capture Rod, it is a lovely sight seeing these highlanders grazing in Cornwall. They surely are beautiful creatures, and we even have them over here in our small country…:) Best regards,Henri.
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Henri, Highland Cattle seem to be making a presence in so many parts of the world in recent years, I was delighted to find these ones on the Cornish coast and just had to include them in the composition,
Regards, Rod.
vadim19
Wonderful capture, Rod! Very interesting animals, never seen them before.
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Vadim, they are Scottish Highland cattle and as a Scot I was delighted to see them grazing on the Cornish coast so far from their native Scotland,
Regards, Rod.
JUSTART
great shot
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much,
Regards, Rod.
Martina Fagan
Hi Rod
A truely lovely shot Rod perfect composition:)
Best Wishes Tina
rodsfotos replied
Hi Tina, thanks so much my friend, it was a surprise to see the Highland cattle there in Cornwall so I just had to get them in a couple of the coastal shots,
Regards, Rod.
Lois Bryan
The tones of red and gold contrast soooo beautifully with the cool greens and blues … oh come on now, admit it, you photoshopped them in there!!!! haha … I’m teasing you, you know … you are one of the great ones who can coax magic out of your camera without doing a thing!!!!!!! As ever … I’m in awe of your art and so inspired to get it right one of these days!!!!!
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you so much Lois, it was a surprise to see them there on the Cornish coast, I have since heard that they are there because they graze at a height that encourages the Cornish Chough to nest and settle in the area, they are an ancient species of black bird similar to a crow and have been missing from Cornwall for years, thankfully they are slowly coming back to their native county and a team of volunteers are guarding their nests 24/7,
Regards, Rod.
Kathy Reid
Very picturesque, love all the different colours on the highland cattle…stunning!
rodsfotos replied
Many thanks again Kathy, many people think they only come in the one golden brown colour but it was good to see the full range of colours together like this and in such a beautiful location,
Regards, Rod.
Sharon Mau
The castle on the headland stands out clear as day. It is a sensational view and the cattle are so beautiful!
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much again Sharon, I’d have been more than happy with the coastal shot, the bonus of the Highland cattle grazing in the foreground made my day,
Regards, Rod.
rightasrain
Such a wonderful vista and the cattle tucking in. Lovely!
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Hillie, I took this on a recent holiday in Cornwall, I was so surprised to see Highland cattle there and what a view they were enjoying,
Regards, Rod.
EarthGipsy
LOL!! Love those cows, how lucky they are to live right there!! Lovely image Rod x0x
rodsfotos replied
They look so much at home yet so far from their native Scotland, a bit like the photographer perhaps, many thanks again Sonia,
Regards, Rod.
Kate Adams
Beautiful pastoral scene Rod – the view is stunning and the castle stands alone, I have to admit it must have been odd to see Highland cattle but came across some the other day in Ohio, I had to looks twice, beautiful animals – stunning capture!!
rodsfotos replied
I think it must be the Scottish blood, they seem to pop up in every corner of the world these days, there is a herd of them high on Dartmoor not so far from where I live now in Devon, thank-you very much Kate,
Regards, Rod.
Lynda McDonald
do they clip these cattle?.................ours do not have hair like this nor are they quite as attractive, well accept for the jersey , very nice Rod
rodsfotos replied
No they don’t clip any cattle that I’ve heard of Lynda, these are only young and will have much longer coats as they mature, Jerseys and the other Channel Island breed Guernseys are cute but quite different from the Scottish Highland cattle, many thanks my friend,
Regards, Rod.
Brendan Schoon
WOW, Rod what do you have here? Great shot, wonderful composition and the colors are extremely good!! Like the highlanders very much, was there a fence or something? Great scenery, very well done.
Brendan
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Brendan, there was a dry stone wall around the little field the cattle were in, I was surprised to see them there on the Cornish coast,
Regards, Rod.
Malcolm Chant
What a great capture, I have never seen Highland cattle down there, & do9 not reconize it from this angle.
Excellent shot.
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Malcolm, directly opposite the entrance to the car park there is a gate to the field the cattle were in, I just hopped over the gate and tried to frame them all and include as much of the headland as I could.
I went a little further down to the old ruined St. Helens Oratory and tried a similar kind of composition with the headland as a backdrop but haven’t got round to editing any of them yet,
Regards, Rod.
jeffrae
Well, what can I add…as you must know from all these comments that this sure is a special beauty…for me a fav. Love the sea and love the Highland cattle!
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Jaffrae, I was more than pleased with getting the coastal composition in such good weather conditions but the Highland Cattle were a bonus I wasn’t expecting,
Regards, Rod.
julie anne gr...
great shot and beautiful scenery so different to aussie
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Julie, we certainly get a lot more rain than you do, hence the greenery, sometimes a lot more rain than we need,
Regards, Rod.
mikebov
stunning capture Rod
The highland cattle look well suited to the cornish landscape
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Mike, it was quite a pleasant surprise for me as a Scot to see them there, they do seem well suited to the rugged terrain,
Regards, Rod.
LavenderMoon
I just love the fuzzy cows…. we have some here in Pennsylvania… but you don’t see many of them. Fabulous view they have… I hope they appreciate it!
