Arlington Row, Bibury

Arlington Row, Bibury

I took this image a few years ago when I had been invited to a wedding and the reception was in the nearby Swan Hotel at Bibury in the Cotswolds.

Just had to sneak away for a few minutes to grab a couple of images of these delightful National Trust owned Cotswold cottages, well it’s what most of us photographers would do isn’t it !!!

Loved how the soft light brought out the textures and tones of the mellow Cotswold stonework.

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you very much Diane, Arlington Row is much photographed and it’s owner’s The National Trust treat it as a jewel in their portfolio of old English architecture, great to know that you have it on a book cover, often you can’t get a decent photo of it for the number of people visiting, I must have been lucky that day to find it without anyone there,

Oh Rod … I had to laugh at your comment … yes, it’s indeed what most of us would have done!!! And i’m sooo glad you did!!! This is a glorious image … the perfect angle to capture so much beauty!!!! When we were in the Costwolds, it was cold and rainy … wind blowing … but even so, I could see the golden stone … even on a gray day, it had a glorious glow!!!! But to see the magic that our Rod creates here … ahhhhh … NOW I see how they should look!!!!

  • rodsfotos replied

Hi Lois, thanks so much my friend, only another photographer would understand the way our minds think at times, at least my good lady knows exactly what I’m doing when I sneak off like this,

Rod this is a gorgeous capture of those cottages and the treatise you wrote in the description box about them is a good example of ekphrasis
Care to bring it to the EEG
This is the scene I think of when I think of country villages in England!
Do people actually live in these cottages still? How old are they?
I’ll go read the comments now … you’ve probably already answered these questions lol
    Chookas! X♥X

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you so much, yes all the cottages are inhabited by tenants, they date back about 400 years and were originally weaver’s cottages who all worked at nearby Arlington Mill, they are visited by hundreds of people on busy days in the Summer so I was fortunate to get an image with nobody in it,
    Regards, Rod.

  • Magee

Oh my goodness Rod! What a delightful scene! I just love those steeply pitched roofs, and the wonderful golden tones of the 16th century stonework. It’s so idyllic, so much so, that I find it impossible to envisage a motor-mower cutting the lawn at the far end of the street. Absolutely gorgeous my friend!!

  • rodsfotos replied

Y’know I spent 18 months in the RAF near Cirencester, which is not really all that far from here. In fact I cycled over on a couple of occasions I remember. This beautiful photo brings it all back to me because I had completely and totally forgotten all about it. Magnificent colours and perspective, with the eye naturally following the line of the laneway and wondering what is round the corner. You have a portfolio of some of the most beautiful photos in RB and this one is up there with the best of them. Peter

That’s interesting Rod and I remember the town well because for 15 months I was on the RAF base at South Cerney. We often used to walk into Cirencester for breakfast at a great restaurant called Viners (In those days there was a fairly fast flowing stream running alongside the road and we, being mature fighting men of the RAF, used to throw matchsticks into the stream and have a bet on whose would reach Cirencester first!!) LOL There was also a Trust House in the town at which my parents stayed on a couple of occasions and the great viewpoint in the area was Birdlip Hill (think I have the name right)
Just look what you started with a photo of Bibury!!! LOL All the best, Peter

  • rodsfotos replied

I’ve obviously stirred up many memories of the past for you Peter, as an apprentice I worked under a man who served in the RAF at South Cerney (Dick Russ), he would often recall many of the things he got up to at that time.
Yes you are correct with Birdlip Hill, it’s an amazing viewpoint, I will have to make the effort to get back up there with the camera soon, places like Bourton-on-the-Water are perfect for images like this.

Stunning capture of times gone bye. the national trust really do excellent work preserving such beauty for all to see. These cottages are stunning and can almost imagine them in their time. families born and raised. Sorrow, grief and laughter, contained within their walls. thank you for sharing this with us, and I visit Loo in Cornwall each time i go there on a short break. A beautiful county with beautiful people and scenery. http://www.philadelphia33.org/

  • rodsfotos replied

Thank-you very much Trevor, the National Trust do indeed do a grand job in preserving so many of our ancient buildings.
These were originally built as homes for the mill workers at the nearby mill.
Looe is a beautiful little Cornish Fishing town, I try to visit it a couple of times every year, but anywhere in Cornwall is appealing to me,
    Regards, Rod.

Wonderful shot Rod, you really do have some stunning work. You mention you use a CP Filter – what is this used for (if you don’t mind me asking)? Keep up the good work.

  • rodsfotos replied 15 days ago

    Thanks so much Gary.
Yes I do use the Circulat Polarizing Filter when it’s at all sunny, it lessens reflected light on all objects, grass, leaves, water to name a few, and better saturates the colours, blue skies also show up that bit more blue, it you can imagine the effect when you put on a pair of Polarizing Sunglasses on a bright sunny day, that’s exactly what the filter does,
    Regards, Rod.
