Huckworthy Bridge, Dartmoor, Devon
In a sleepy hollow below the little Dartmoor village of Walkhampton, the River Walkham makes it way off the high moor ground with the ancient stone Huckworthy Bridge crossing it next to the former Post Office.
A little known part of the moors to tourists and so peaceful, I often enjoy a walk down from the village along the riverside to escape the many visitors who at times overcrowd the moors.

rodsfotos replied
Thanks so much Don, I thought you might know it, a great place to escape the crowds in Summertime, the last time I was there I walked over the bridge and off to the right for a mile or two till I got to a donkey sanctuary and guess what, my battery ran flat before I could get a decent shot of any of them,
Regards, Rod.

Beautiful capture Rod, and a place i’ve never heard of.
Will have to look this one up.
rodsfotos replied
Many thanks Richard, if you leave Yelverton at the roundabout and turn up to the moors, when you reach Dousland there is a large hotel on a crossroads, turn left down to Walkhampton, through the village and you reach this at the bottom of the hill, worth a visit,

OOOOPS!!!!!!I MEANT TO ASK IF IT WAS NEAR MERTON. DUH!!!!!!! DEVON….ONE OF MY FAVORITE AREAS…BEAUTIFUL,PEACEFUL, FRIENDLY,CLEAN, WHY MY ANCESTORS CHOSE TO LEAVE IT I WILL NEVER KNOW…..I SUPPOSE IT WAS QUITE A BIT DIFFERENT 200 YEARS AGO…...
rodsfotos replied
I’d guess it’s about twenty miles from Merton as the crow flies Diane but almost twice that far by road, one day I’ll try to visit Merton if I’m up that way.
mikebov
We have family who live in Gunnislake
I know Tavistock area quite well
I will search this location out on my next visit
rodsfotos replied
Not far from Tavistock, go on to Yelverton then turn left up onto the moors, a shortway up and you get to a small village,Dousland, there is a large moorland hotel on a crossroads, turn left to Walkhampton down a narrow lane, through the village and you reach this at the bottom.

rodsfotos replied

I thought I knew Dartmoor very well but I certainly can’t recall Walkhampton – and I can’t see myself ever forgetting such a delightful place. This is a wonderful photo and in full size the clarity of the water is really emphasised. I was also attracted to the contrast of the bright red provided by the post box. Just gorgeous Rod.
Best wishes,
Peter
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Peter, it’s on the Western side of the moors only a couple of miles on the moor side of Yelverton, if you leave the big roundabout at Yelverton and head up to the moors, there is a crossroads at the little village of Dousland, turn right to Burrator Reservoir or if you turn left you go down to Walkhampton, hope that rings a bell in your memory,
Regards, Rod.

this is beautiful Rod typifies Devon, it looks a bit like Badgers Holt, I love that place, near Princetown.x
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Catherine, it does indeed look like Badgers Holt, just a bit quieter with very few tourists.
I’m sure you’d enjoy a walk along the river there, if you go from Princetown towards Yelverton and at the little village of Dousland (near Burrator) turn right down to Walkhampton and continue through the village till you reach the bridge,
Regards, Rod.
bevanimage
What a lovely rural scene, Rod, that could only be in England! So green, lush and beautiful. A real relief to the eyes after the heat, fire and smoke we’ve been having. I’m sorry I missed this when you first posted it. Congratulations also on your feature.
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you very much Bevan, we seem to be at opposite ends of the spectrum with us having a little too much rain at times.
I have felt deeply disturbed by the terrible bushfires that have ravaged your area recently and my heart goes out to all who have suffered,
Regards, Rod.
Magee
Oh my word Rod! Talk about picture-perfect!!. An absolutely delightful composition, and such amazingly, lush greenery. I can’t help but think about Harrys, when I see houses covered in Ivy like that! I love the look of them, but to me, it’s an open invitation, akin to rolling out the red welcoming carpet. (I’m a bit of an arachnophobe I’m afraid). A wonderful shot Rod.!
rodsfotos replied
Thank-you so much Robyn, it is a very peaceful out of the way location and I have often thought how wonderful it would be to live in that ivy clad house overlooking the bridge and stream.
Ivy does look pretty growing on an old house like this but I too would lose it for a different reason, it eventually finds it’s way into every slight crack and can do serious damage over the years,
Regards, Rod.
CarolM
