A Proud Team
The farmer who breeds and shows these magnificent Shire horses had stopped near his Dartmoor farm at Ponsworthy to give the horses a bit of a breather so I was pleased to get the opportunity of a few close-up shots of them.
Undoubtedly a proud team, not only the horses but also the farmer and his wife who lavish so much care and attention in keeping them up to top show standard.
Shire horses are reputedly the largest breed of heavy horse in the world, both of these had been sired by King, who at the time was in the Guinness book of Records as being the largest heavy horse anywhere at almost 20 hands, that is almost 80 inches high to it’s shoulder.

Utterly delightful Rod. Is this the same team that work around Cockington? My eyes went to the word Ponsworthy and I was immediately transported back to the mid/late 1960’s when I had a regular fortnightly call on their little village shop. This was on the run that took me on up to Widecombe. I wonder if the shop’s still there? Ah, memories!! Best wishes, Peter
rodsfotos replied
No Peter these are quite a lot bigger and stronger than the ponies at Cockington. I can’t recall where the shop was at Ponsworthy but can confirm that there isn’t one there now, the nearest shop being at Widecombe nowadays, thanks again my friend,
Regards, Rod.
georgieboy98
Thanks Rod. I used to have a call at Poundsgate on that run, too. From memory on that morning I started off at a BP garage on the A6, then to the Welcome Stranger at Bickington, then the Toby Jug before cutting across through the villages to Widecombe. After Widecombe I headed off to Dartmeet (Badgers’ Holt) and gradually worked my way back round to Newton Abbot. It was a good run!! Peter

TREVOR IRWIN
This si so well captured and it really brings back memories to me. As a child in Ireland, our Neighbour Mr Flanagan used to plough, cut hay, and do many farm chores with tow Shire horses, called Samson and Goliath. I still remember how I would look over the gate and watch him as he would shout and cuss Samson, who tended to want to go his own way at times. Flanagan would stop quite often and say he was resting the horses, but I was no fool. He stopped to have a swig of whiskey. This photograph really has brought back beautiful memories. thank you for sharing these beautiful Shire horses with me.
