Totnes Past and Present
Time to try something different and I’d appreciate your honest feedback on this one please.
Two highly reflective images taken in the portrait format, slightly cropped and reduced in size to fit on a black mask, total image size is 4500×3000.
I took both of these images within minutes of one another from each side of the old bridge over the River Dart in my former home town Totnes, Devon.
The PAST image is of the former warehouses and church converted to luxury riverside apartments, the PRESENT being a new block of colourful riverside houses recently built on the site of a former garage business.

rodsfotos replied
Hi Barbara, thank-you so much my friend, there are so many things i like about this old town and I’m sure it won’t be long before you all know it as well as I do, must keep the subjects varied along the way though,
Regards, Rod.

Very impressive Rod, although I’ve just checked, and couldn’t find a memo requesting permission to play with my all-time fovourite image. lolol!
Just a thought. Did you try joining the grey building to the pink, and cropping out the brick by any chance? I realize the boat would be lost, and possibly the larger buoy, but I’ve checked, and there seems to be enough left in my fav image with the highest brick building ommitted. I love the concept of what you’ve done here Rod. It works incredibly well. I’ve been right through you portfolio, and I can’t see the one on my right uploaded. It’s a wonderful shot too. Fascinating colour for buildings! Looks to be a pinky/apricot. Now I look forward to your feedback! lololol!
rodsfotos replied
You’re giving me too many ideas Robyn, it would certainly be a fun exercise for a Winter evening and I never dismiss anything, only time will tell,LOL.
The new buildings on the right took the place of a real eyesore of a car garage business that moved to a nearby business park, they don’t look too bad for new build, there is also a large block of apartments behind them that face the old town and they have done a wonderful job on matching the style of a large Elizabethan hotel on the opposite side of the junction, that will doubtless be another submission,
Regards, Rod.
georgieboy98
You only ever submit work of the absolute highest standard Rod and this is up there with the very best. Each photo would be a stand out on it’s own but putting them together in this way – and viewing them in conjunction with your explanation – adds an extra dimension. It shows what a single picture cannot show which is the before and after – exactly the effect you were striving for. A truly excellent piece of work old buddy. All best wishes, Peter
rodsfotos replied
Thanks so much for the wonderful comment Peter, I don’t know if you would recall the old garage business adjoining the old stone bridge over the Dart, but they knocked it down at last and replaced it with these colourful houses and a block of apartments on the other side facing the road, not bad at all, at least they are not modern style,
Regards, Rod.

This is a beautiful and wonderfully effective collage Rod, I love it! I very much enjoyed reading your commentary on how you created this. I especially love the ‘Past’ image on the left the most with the textures and colours of the weathered stone and the red boat so perfectly placed within your framing. Wonderful composition and crystal clear focus, they are both very beautiful!
